World Asthma Day 2022 Conference in Malaysia

World Asthma Day 2022 “Closing Gaps in Asthma Care”

Yeah‼️ SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 would like to sharing here about her recent media attendance to witness the awareness conference on theme “Closing Gaps in Asthma Care” in conjunction with the World Asthma Day 2022

It was being officiated by YB Khairy Jamaluddin, the Minister of Health of Malaysia 🇲🇾 “For the past 2 years, we have been busy with the pandemic Covid-19. Now, as we transition to the endemic phase, it’s time that we go back to optimize the health care system. The Health Facts 2021 released in 2021 by the ministry has showed that the asthma-related deaths are the 2nd highest recorded at the government hospitals. This can be avoided through bridging the gaps in asthma care,” YB Khairy said at the conference

He has also thanked all Malaysians for adhering to Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP) during the current transition into the endemic phase, especially during the Raya festivities , yes, #kitajagakita

This World Asthma Day Conference 2022 was organized by Asthma Malaysia & Dr Helmy Haja Mydin, the Co-Founder of Asthma Malaysia. Asthma Malaysia is a non-profitable organization with the mission to serve as a credible resource on asthma, to raise awareness of best standards of care & to empower patients in the management of their asthma. Its vision is to be Malaysia’s leading portal for asthma with a view of creating more informed & empowered patients. Also aim to ensure that asthma care in Malaysia is equal to the best in the world with a view to reducing the suffering & deaths associated with it

World Asthma Day is an annual awareness event supported by Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), US based National Heart Lung & Blood Institute (NHLB) & the World Asthma Foundation. It aims to raising awareness of asthma & how it affects sufferers. The day falls on the 1️⃣st Tuesday in May each year with aims to raising support for sufferers & their families. Asthma also is included in the WHO’s Global Action Plan for the Prevention & Control of NCDs & the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

SiennyLovesDrawing has learnt so much from her attendance at this half-day conference aimed to discuss the challenges & solutions in addressing the gaps in asthma care in Malaysia in line with the World Asthma Day 2022’s theme ~ Closing Gaps in Asthma Care ~ In Malaysia, asthma affects almost 2 million children & adults with respiratory diseases being the 2nd most common cause of death within the Ministry of Health hospitals[1]

However, the lack of recognition of asthma as an area of focus in the national healthcare agenda, in particular has been cited as one of the major barriers in enabling earlier & equitable access to both diagnosis & evidence-guided treatment among the asthma patients in the country[2]

This conference is held to commemorate the celebration of the World Asthma Day 2022 in collaboration with the Malaysian Thoracic Society (MTS), Malaysian Family Medicine Specialists’ Association (FMSA), Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS), Novartis Malaysia & AstraZeneca Malaysia

It started with the opening speech by Dr Helmy Haja Mydin, the Co-Founder of Asthma Malaysia. During this conference, healthcare experts, patient representatives & industry partners have come together to explore the potential of making asthma as a key non-communicable disease (NCD) priority area in Malaysia

The sessions are as follows,

  • Asthma Control: Paving the Way Towards Symptom-free Days , by the Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ernest Poh Mau Ern, Consultant Respiratory Physician, UMMC

Asthma & COVID-19

1. People with moderate to severe asthma may be at higher risk of getting very sick from COVID-19. COVID-19 which affects the respiratory system can cause an asthma exacerbation & possibly lead to pneumonia & acute respiratory disease[3].

2. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, GINA released some interim guidelines for asthmatics and physicians to adhere to as below[3]:

  • People with asthma should continue all their inhaled medication, including ICS, as prescribed by their doctor
  • In acute asthma attacks, patients should urgently see their healthcare provider to prevent escalation of the condition
  • Nebulisers should, where possible, be avoided for acute attacks due to the increased risk of dissemina:ting COVID-19 (to other patients and to physicians, nurses & other health personnel)

3. Pressurised metered dose inhaler (pMDI) via a spacer is the preferred treatment during severe attacks (spacers must not be shared at home)

4. While a patient is being treated for a severe attack, their maintenance inhaled asthma treatment should be continued (at home & in the hospital)

  • Patients with allergic rhinitis should continue to take their nasal corticosteroids, as prescribed by their clinician
  • Routine spirometry testing should be suspended to reduce the risk of viral transmission & if necessary, adequate infection control measures should be taken

This session also included recorded video with virtual sharing from 2 asthma patients, do check out to view from the FB live recording links at Asthma Malaysia’s FB page

  • Addressing the Gaps in Asthma care in Malaysia , by Dr. Sri Wahyu Taher, President of Malaysia Family Medicine Specialists’ Association & Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pang Yong Kek, President of Malaysia Thoracic Society

Current Gaps in Asthma Care Worldwide

According to GINA, in addition to unequal access to diagnosis & treatment, the current gaps in asthma care exist[4]:

  • between care for different socio-economic, ethnic & age groups
  • between wealthy & poorer communities and countries
  • in communication & care across the primary / secondary/ tertiary care
  • in communication & education provided for people with asthma, (quality of asthma care plans)
  • in asthma knowledge & asthma awareness between health care providers
  • in prioritization between asthma & other long-term conditions
  • between prescribing inhalers & monitoring adherence & ability to use them
  • between the general public’s (non-asthmatics) & health care professionals’ understanding that asthma is a chronic (not acute) disease
  • between scientific evidence & actual delivery of care for people with asthma

Yeah‼️ Happy 2020 to all ğŸŽŠğŸŽ‰

A special thanks 🙏🏻 to a running buddy🙋🏻‍♀️’s invitation 💌📲 as her running 🏃🏻‍♀️ companion, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 has then signed up ✅ for a 13km ~ Malaysia No. 1️⃣ highway 🛣 & night run 🌃🌌🏃🏻‍♀️named Besraya Highway Challenge Run 😃😁 in 2019

Yes ✅, her 1️⃣st experience of running on a highway 🛣 & a night run 🌃🌌🏃🏻‍♀️ with this participation. Yeah‼️

Sharing this throw back to self motivate to continuing her running 🏃🏻‍♀️ passion in 2020

Yes ✅, her 1️⃣st experience for a highway run 🛣🏃🏻‍♀️ & also a night run 🌃🌌🏃🏻‍♀️ She 👩🏻 loves 💗 & always only participated for early morning 🔅🔆 running events 🏃🏻‍♀️

Guess what❓⁉️

Her 👩🏻 initial concern 🤔 to her girl friend 🙋🏻‍♀️ about falling asleep 😴💤 since this running 🏃🏻‍♀️ event gonna happened from 7️⃣pm to 1️⃣am. She 👩🏻 is worried 😧 that she will be sleepy 💤😑 😴by then

Ha…Ha…😂🤣😆 She 👩🏻 actually prepared for her 1️⃣st night run by slept a lot 😴💤 😴💤 during the day time on the running day ~ 24 Aug 😅😂 Her running friends complimented that she was looking energetic 😁 before the run 🏃🏻‍♀️

Surprisingly, she 👩🏻 was quite enjoyed 😃😁her 1️⃣st night run 🌃🌌🏃🏻‍♀️participation

Reason being no worries ❌ for sun burn ğŸŒžâ˜€ï¸, hence no ❌ sunscreen application on her skin before run 🏃🏻‍♀️ Moreover, she 👩🏻 felt more relax 😌 to run 🏃🏻‍♀️ at night 🌃🌌, windy & cooling air🌬💨❄️ Felt great 👍🏻 & she 👩🏻 sure will be more often to participate in night running events 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️ then ✅🌃🌌🏃🏻‍♀️

The Loke Yew Toll Plaza is served as this highway run 🛣🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️’s starting point with the flag off 📣🏁 for her 13km night run 🌃🌌🏃🏻‍♀️ participation @ 9.30pm after an energetic pre-run warm-up 🤸🏻‍♀️🚶🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️💪🏻👟session led by Fitness First 👫👭👬 with an entitlement of a running tee ğŸŽ½ & a finisher medalğŸŽ–each respectively 😃

Yeah‼️ This gonna be her 1️⃣st time enjoyed a night running 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️ 🌃🌌 on a fully closed highway 🛣 in Malaysia 🇲🇾😀

Yes ✅, this was the Malaysia 🇲🇾’s 1️⃣st ever Duo Highway 🛣🛣 Challenge. However, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 has not ❌ participated the earlier sister run 🏃🏻‍♀️ 🏃🏻‍♂️ ~ NPE Highway Run 🛣🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️2019 in July 2019, instead only this Besraya Highway Night Run 2019 🛣🌃🌌🏃🏻‍♀️

This Besraya Highway Challenge Run 🛣🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️has drew about 7K participants 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️& marked the completion ✅ of the series following the New Pantai Express (NPE) Highway 🛣 Challenge (its sister run) of 9K participants 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️in July. Wow‼️ IJM Allianz Duo Highway 🛣 Challenge series in 2019 which organised by Besraya (M) Sdn Bhd, New Pantai Expressway Sdn Bhd & EC Pixels has actually attracted an attendance of approximately 16K participants 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️

Wow‼️ She 👩🏻 felt her participating privilege to this run 🏃🏻‍♀️ with all excess to the highway 🛣 being closed 🛑📛, yes, fully closed throughout the running duration 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️

Yes✅, she 👩🏻 really enjoyed 😃😁 her running 🏃🏻‍♀️ without ❌ worrying any speedy cars 🚙🚗 on the highway 🛣 Yeah‼️ Also a chance to enjoy city lights 💡💡 & skyline views of the KL city 🏙🌃🌌on the 13km running 🏃🏻‍♀️ 🏃🏻‍♂️ route

Really an unforgettable experience to run 🏃🏻‍♀️on the highway 🛣 for a rare occasion ~ Her 1️⃣st participation for highway run & night run 🛣🌃🌌🏃🏻‍♀️

Hurray‼️ Successfully completed this run 🏃🏻‍♀️ within 2️⃣ hours & she 👩🏻 loves 💗 her medal 🏅from this 1️⃣st highway run & 1️⃣st night run 🛣🌃🌌🏃🏻‍♀️

So, have you ever tried running 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️on a highway 🛣 without paying tol ❌💰❓⁉️

You wouldn’t want to miss your chance to ya 😍

It is also a challenge ~ A runner 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️’s time will be accumulated for these 2️⃣ highway event 🛣 & of course there will be a winner 🏆 for the shortest accumulated time for participants 👫👭👬 who has join both aka IJM Duo Highway Challenge 2019 🛣🛣🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️🤗

Hmm…Will sure join again next year‼️ Yeah‼️
