Hey 👋🏻 all, this time SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻😁 is excited to share about exciting things to do when travel to Yala, Pattani & Narathiwat at Southern Thailand 🇹🇭
The Southern Thailand’s cultural & religious diversity is increasingly becoming more attractive as there are hidden gems that are worth to be explored ya 😃 This media trip with courtesy of The Press Association of Southern Thailand aims to share awareness that the Southern Thailand is safe & open for business investors & tourists from around the world 🌎 eg. Malaysia 🇲🇾, Indonesia 🇮🇩, Singapore 🇸🇬, Brunei 🇧🇳 etc.
During her Betong, Yala trip, she got a privilege to meet Mr Akk Yangaphai Na Songkla 👨🏽💼, the Betong Regional Chairman & Mr Chaiyong Maneerungsakul 🙋🏽♂️, President of The Press Association Of Southern Thailand at a hosted welcome dinner 🍽️ They both proudly shared during the dinner that there were approximately 400 tourists 🧑🏻🤝🧑🏻👭🏻👫🏻 per day in Betong. By continuously promoting Betong, they aims to increase ⬆️ more tourists to visit Betong in coming years, as well as welcome more investment opportunities from Malaysia 🇲🇾 & Indonesia 🇮🇩 After 19 years from the past unsafe conditions in Southern Thailand, it’s now with improved safety level
To-date, the Malaysian tourists has reached a million mainly because of Betong’s cooling weather & grows well with flowers 🌺🌼🌹🌸, fruits 🍍🍌🍓 & vegetables 🥦🌽🍅 plantations. Approximately THB 🔟millions export value gained from the Betong durians & mangosteens, fresh Tilapia fish 🐟, “Pak Nam” vegetables, Betong chicken etc.

Yala is known as “The Garden City” as it contains a number of parks & the Pattani River runs along the city 🏙️🌆
It’s considered the best city plan in Thailand 🇹🇭 & the 23th best city plan of the world 🌎 with its spider web 🕸️ layout. From the top view, there are many circle ⭕ paths layout from the innermost, ie. The centre of its city, Shrine of the city-god & consists of government places eg. The provincial hall, provincial court, district office, police station etc. The 2️⃣nd circle path is with official residences. The 3️⃣rd circle path with the hospital 🏥, schools 🏫, houses & commercial places: markets & shops. The roads from other districts will head into the centre of the city at the innermost circle path
It’s the tunnel that the Thai Development Cooperators or former Malaya Communist Party built as a base camp in 1976 for hiding from air raids & storing food supplies. This was 1️⃣ of the significant base camps in the southern border provinces. Before entering the tunnel, you will see 4️⃣ white pigeon 🐦 statues created as a memorial to mark the alliance of the 4️⃣ main communities battling in the war. This tunnel construction used only 40 to 50 people to dig through the mountain ⛰️ & whole construction took only 3️⃣ months to complete 💯✅ with its main purpose was to gain protection from aerial bombing & as a planning base for missions in south borders
This tunnel located in Piyamit 1 village is approximately 50 to 60ft wide & 1️⃣km long. It can contain almost 200 people & has 9️⃣ entrances that are all connected. At present, only with 6️⃣ accessible entrances. Inside the tunnel, it features a radio station, bedrooms, food supply storage room, several small tums & corners etc. Up on the ground, it’s covered by a dense forest with big trees 🌳🌳 to make it difficult for the government’s military 🎖️🪖 to locate & find this tunnel
From SiennyLovesDrawing’s 👩🏻 recent visit, this tunnel tour took approximately 2️⃣ hours & it’s well equipped with lights & the air inside is cool & comfortable
There is an old tree 🌳 that believe by local Thais as Piyamit Millennium Tree, inst-worthy spot ya
In fact, this tunnel was used as a shelter, an operation base, an escape place from air strikes & a provision station in 1976 for about 40 to 50 Malaysian communists who burrowed into the hillside. They have dug the soil manually without any machine for 3️⃣ months
It can house & hold up to 200 pax with its inside air that is cool & well installed with electricity. This tunnel showcases the lifestyle of the native people & interesting history
Hmm…SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 was spontaneously being asked to be the Chinese to English translation on the spot for the rest of the media team members from Malaysia & Indonesia
She has tried her best & thanks for the trust & compliments ya 💪🏻🙌🏻👏🏻👍🏻💯 A special thank you 🙏🏻 for the trust & invitation from The Press Association of Southern Thailand
This garden is situated in the middle of a mountain in Piyamit 2 Village of the Thai Nation Development Cooperators. Yes ✅, it’s nearby the Piyamit Tunnel. It’s the only winter flower garden in Southern Thailand 🇹🇭 because Betong, Yala has cool weather all year round & having enormous potential for growing winter flowers. Aka “Suan Muen Bupha” by the local Thais community with meaning of 🔟 thousands flowers
This garden was under the royal initiative of Her Royal Highness Princess 👸 Maha Chakri Sirindhorn ie. Flower planting project, so that young generations are promoted to participate in taking care the plants
Then, this valley has become a tourist destination with its blossoms colourful winter flowers that similar to the Northern mountains & these winter flowers are exported products of Southern Thailand
There are a variety of flowers in full bloom ie. Asters, Hydrangeas, Chrysanthemums, Roses, Gerberas, Lilies, Gladiolus etc. She was told during her garden tour that Tulip 🌷 was once planted in here, however due to expensive costing & planting challenges, it has stopped now
Ohh ya…All its visitors can enjoy durian season from July to Sept every year in here
It also offers various accommodation options 🛌💤😴 with meeting rooms available for corporate meetings within this garden, restaurants & cafes 🍽️☕🍹
Admission is required 🎟️✅ to enter & visit this beautiful garden within its opening hours from 7.30am to 5.30pm
Yeah‼️ SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 is back to this Skywalk @ Aiyerweng after 6️⃣ years. Yes ✅, in year 2017, she was invited by The Press Association Of Southern Thailand, at that time it’s in planning stage to build this beautiful attraction, including the domestic Betong airport ✈️ The airport already in operation, however stopped at present due to not many flights
This cable stay cantilevered sky bridge has been opened since 2019. It features a 63m length bridge 🌉 that extending from its base. There’s a viewing terrace which open to the vertiginous sight of the ground that can be viewed through its transparent glass floor, as well as the breathtaking panoramic 😍🤩 surrounding undulating terrains in all directions
It’s still with stunning beautiful view as before, except SiennyLovesDrawing feels a bit nervous scared 👩🏻😯😳 while walking on the transparent glass floor, as if she is floating on the sea of mist or even stand on the cloud ☁️ ☁️ 🤗☺️
Ohh… Special thank you 🙏🏻💖 to The Press Association Of Southern Thailand for the trust of SiennyLovesDrawing’s blogging & content creation passion & remembered to invite her again after 6️⃣ years, for sure she will continue to deliver her best 💪🏻👏🏻🙌🏻
Now it’s 1️⃣ of the well known & must visit destination when in Betong, Southern Thailand 🇹🇭 Its cost of constructing was THB150,000,000 ie. Approximately MYR20million paid by the Provincial Community Development Office of Yala. It took 2️⃣ years to complete with services of a local architect from Yala & a contractor from Betong. Its skybridge design was inspired from the local community leaders who have witnessed when they visited the Chiang Mai highlands 🔟 years ago. Then, they decided to work together with Aiyerweng Sub-district Administrative Organisation to turn this inspiration into reality ~ Skywalk @ Aiyerweng
Guess what ❓⁉️
The total numbers of local Thai & foreign visitors here per day can reach 1.8K in particular if Public Holidays season, wow 😲 She was told during her recent visit that since 1 Jan 2023 to 31 Oct 2023, it received over 240K visitors. On average, it welcomes around 400 to 500 visitors per day during weekdays & 1️⃣K visitors per day during weekends
Highly recommended 💯👍🏻 you all to enjoy the cold breeze, fresh air & beautiful sea of mist with greenery view up here 🤩😍 Absolutely worth a superb early wake up morning 🌄 to be here ya
There are 6️⃣ levels & the Skywalk located at Level 3️⃣
Admissions fee is required ✅ Local Thai tourists THB40 per pax & foreign tourist THB200 per pax at the time of her visit. Good security with police & forestry personnel regularly patrol here. Those who wish to fly drones at Aiyerweng Skywalk need to seek prior approval 1️⃣st
Tips 📌: Suggest to bring a cardigan or jacket 🧥 as it’s quite chilling cool when the wind blow 🌬️🥶 Also to wear comfortable shoes 👟 & a compulsory shoe cover to be purchased THB30 at entrance with non slippery bottom to avoid slippery walk at the Skywalk
If it rains 🌧️ ☔ the previous day or evening, the higher the chance for tourists to enjoy a clearer view of sunrise 🌄 & the panoramic sea of mist ☁️☁️ & Aiyerweng’s highlands
From SiennyLovesDrawing’s 👩🏻 own travel experience, it’s recommended to start exploring 1️⃣st from the highest deck ie. Level 6️⃣ by using the lift 🛗
Then, make your way down to each of the other levels & the Skywalk (Level 3️⃣) by using the stairs
Pattani often being referred by the local Muslims Thais as “Serambi Makkah” aka Porch of Mecca. It offers fresh seafood galore & local produce organic sweet salt. Sweet salt 🧂 adds flavour for a healthy cooking. Do check out “Pattani Is Good” ebook via 📲 📖🌐 https://anyflip.com/bplsl/jlsf/
Must visit ~ Pattani’s oldest mosque, Krue Se Mosque aka Masjid Kresik. It’s warranted due to its connection to the establishment of the Pattani Malay Kingdom in early 16th century that shaped local culture & psyche
Note📌: Visitors are required to remove shoes ❌👟 to enter & visit this mosque
Also must visit to the 300-year-old Masjid Al Husseinaka Telok Mano mosque which was constructed without using any single nail 🔩, wow 😲
This mosque is still being used by the local Muslims Thais community & visitors for prayer 🤲🏻🙏🏻
The coastal town of Pattani has long been a centre for harvesting salt from the sea 🌊 & a trading hub for salt exports to China 🇨🇳 & other foreign countries
It’s a unique attraction to visit as it represents the community living, history & cultural heritage of Pattani. Here is the only salt farm in Pattani. The career of making salt has been inherited from the past. The salt is called “Kluea Wan” or sweet salt. It has a good taste, mild salty & usually used in fermenting short-bodied mackerel, making Budu fish sauce, dried fish & to preserving fruits & vegetables of the local Bana community
Hmm…Just that during SiennyLovesDrawing’s 👩🏻 recent visit, it’s not the salt harvest season, hence she doesn’t get to see the clear salt farm, instead all farms were flooded with water at that time
Hmm…A good reason for her to plan another visit to here to observe the salt harvest 😁
These salt farms in Pattani is well known for producing high ⬆️ quality sweet salt by using local traditional methods
These ponds are flooded with shallow sea water. These are left for around 🔟 days until the sun 🌞☀️ evaporates all the water, leaving the salt to be collected & carried away in shoulder baskets to be bagged. Yes ✅, it’s very much a weather reliant industry & takes place under hot sun 🌞☀️ It’s really hard & heavy works as it requires soil, water 💧💦 & sunlight ☀️🌞 Hence, salt farming has declined dramatically in recent years due to climate change & unpredictable weather patterns
Over the years, the salt production process has evolved, however the methods used by the local salt farmers here still remained & largely unchanged. The farm uses a unique technique called the “kra-dai” method, ie. It involves saline groundwater being collected in salt ponds, then it will allow the evaporate process happened naturally under the sun 🌞 This process ensures that the salt is of the highest quality & retains its natural sweetness, hence is well known locally here for it’s mild salty level named as sweet salt, deep salt aka “Harum Manis” in Malay language
Opposite the road of these salt farms (Note📌: Do be extra careful when crossing the road), there are plenty of stalls selling sweet salt
SiennyLovesDrawing has a chance to chat with a local sweet salt seller named Pn Korijoh 👩🏻🗣️🧕🏻 She is originally from Bana, Pattani
Pn Korijoh has explained that raining is a big no no for sweet salt harvesting. It must be hot sunny weather to gain a great 👍🏻 salt harvest, in particular April & May annually
It’s generated from the brackish water from the bay where the fresh water meets the sea water. Each farm with 4️⃣ square ponds, the salt gained from the 1st 3 ponds normally is not so clean to harvest, generally the last pond will harvest great 👍🏻 quality of sweet salt
She briefly explains the process ie. The usage of machines to absorb the sea water to the salt farm. Then, to keep for at least 3️⃣ months to kick start the salt farming & then harvesting
There are some bi-products generated from the sweet salt harvesting. The thin layer of beginning salt harvesting is named as flower salt. The sweet salt & then the dirty sweet salt harvesting which are in grey or black colours will be used as fertiliser instead. Fertiliser salt can be used for rubber trees, coconut 🥥 trees, & palm 🌴 trees. Sun dung fertilizer is the top layer of fertilizer and is a good quality fertilizer
Ohh ya…The Thai locals here have been working with local academia to create some value-added salt products eg. Flower salt, turmeric cooking salt, as well as some salt-based skincare items. There are many health benefits of flower salt eg. As foot soak for the elderly to help them relax, sleep 🥱😴 better & comfortably

Islamic Cultural Heritage Museum & Al-Quran Learning Center
During SiennyLovesDrawing’s 👩🏻 recent visit in Nov 2023, she visited the old museum ie. In a classroom which is located downstairs of the Samanmit Wittaya School 🏫 โรงเรียนสมานมิตรวิทยา ศาลาลูกไก่ 🏫
Mr Mohd Lutfi Samae 👴🏽, the head of the museum, also the Director of Samanmit Wittaya School โรงเรียนสมานมิตรวิทยา ศาลาลูกไก่ & shared that the museum now holds more than 💯 pieces of old Al-Quran that are being donated & is believed some of them already aged more than 150 to 1,100 years old. Some Al-Quran received from India 🇮🇳, China 🇨🇳, Iran 🇮🇷, Egypt 🇪🇬, Yemen 🇾🇪, Morocco 🇲🇦, Spain 🇪🇸, Africa, Uzbekistan 🇺🇿 etc.
Ohh ya…It’s more than just Al-Quran manuscripts kept here, there are plenty of heritage living antiques are kept here to demonstrate the Malay history 💯👏🏻👍🏻

Some of the popular must try foods in Southern Thailand as below,
Nasi Kerabu aka Budu Spicy Rice is a famous Southern Thai dish. It serves with various local vegetables, roasted coconut, dried shrimp or dried fish to enjoy & receive most nutrition value 👍🏻 It’s also the only dish that is eaten with Budu sauce, which is the characteristic of southernmost provinces’ menu
Stir Fried Shrimp with Sator aka Bitter Bean. It’s the original Southern Thailand menu with middle size shrimps 🍤, bitter beans cut in half seed, chilli 🌶️ paste, garlic 🧄, bird’s eyes chilli, shrimp paste & palm sugar as main ingredients
Fried Water Vegetables (Similar to Small Morning Glory vegetable) is the succulent vegetable, grown in the water, in the cool weather less than 25 degree Celsius, must be the place that water runs from the mountain ⛰️, which is only in Betong district. SiennyLovesDrawing enjoys it very much, highly recommended, must eat in Betong ya 👩🏻😋💯👍🏻
Betong Chicken of which the origin Is Liang Zan, China 🇨🇳 When Chinese people emigrated from China to settle in Betong, Yala, they brought in the chicken 🐔 🍗 & made them widespread till now. There are several shops selling Betong chicken. The chicken meat is yellow & tender while the skin is crisp. Other than that, its smell is odorous. Betong chicken bred around 6️⃣ months will get the best quality & taste. Currently, the demand for chicken is increasing ⬆️ The breeding then is not limited to only Betong, Yala, also spreading far & wide

SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻🤩 got amazed that it’s literally an elephant 🐘 🐘 jam on the road within the Surin city centre when she was in the van 🚐 heading to the Statue of Praya Surin Phakdi Srinarong Chang Wang aka Phraya Surin monument for The Surin Elephant Buffet 2023 aka Surin Elephant Feeding Party consisting of different fruits & vegetables 🍉🥒🍌
The 2.2m life-size statue of Phraya Surin is holding a curved pike showing his mastery over the local Surin elephants 🐘🐘This monument to the founder & 1️⃣st mayor of Surin sits on a roundabout at the southern edge of town & is framed by 2️⃣ huge stylized elephant tusks. Across the road is a group of elephants & mahouts statues commemorating the historical importance of elephants 🐘🐘 for the region
SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 has gained her amazing memorable 1️⃣st experience of feeding elephant with cucumber 🐘🥒 at the buffet
Guess what❓⁉️
This elephant 🐘 loves cucumber🥒 & she wanted to give me a kiss 😘 after I fed her with cucumber🥒😂😆 But…but… SiennyLovesDrawing scared of being kissed, hahaha 🤣😂 😆 as captured in her IG album via 📹📸 🌐 https://www.instagram.com/p/C0AtodqSESZ/
Elephant Talent Shows ~ Available for day time & night show
It’s with more than 200 elephants performing, to witness the remarkable skills of Surin Province’s cherished elephants. This showcase boasting the world’s most extensive gathering of captive elephants to showcase their art 🎨🖌️ painting skills, soccer ⚽ skills etc.
It showcasing the physical abilities & skills of elephants 🐘🐘 It’s held at the Si Narong Stadium 🏟️ which has been named as the world’s largest domestic elephant village by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)
SiennyLovesDrawing as an art lover personally got amazed by how the elephant painted a tree artwork during the show. It’s amazingly to watch how the elephant using their trunk to hold brushes to create paintings with helps from their mahout with the different colour paints, then slowly dappled the paint with their trunk to shape the leaves on the tree 🤩😍
Hmm… Frankly speaking, while SiennyLovesDrawing was watching how impressive that an elephant has painted a nice tree with its signature as SK during the talent show, however she just can’t help but wonder whether the elephant art training methods vice versa the results reflect the animal cruelty 🤔❓⁉️ She is just unsure…
The said painting by Elephant SK was auctioned for THB10K during the talent show & owned by 1️⃣ of the Thai official. Hmm…Do the sum won got to channel back for the welfare of this said art talented elephant named SK❓⁉️ She really hopes it is channeled for the welfare of Surin’s elephants 👩🏻💖🇹🇭🐘💯
At night, the finale show features the enactment of the battle between the Siamese & the Burmese forces. The Siam forces are dressed in red ❤️ & the forces from Burma are dressed in blue 💙 The battles end with the victory of the Siamese. There’s a mini half-marathon as well which is known as “Mueang Chang”
The festival ends with a cultural show ~ Amazing Elephant Light & Sound Performance Show with music, dance & historical reenactments, also the beautiful fireworks 🎆 🎇 at Si Narong Stadium 🏟️

Let’s plan your trip to enjoy this rich culture annual event ✨ Surin Elephant🐘🐘Festival ~ The Surin’s Elephant Round Up ✨ Yes ✅, in November every year 🇹🇭
Tips📌: Bring own water bottle to stay hydrated as it’s easily half a day spent to enjoy the elephant parade & buffet party, wear a cardigan/ jacket 🧥 (Cold 🌬️❄️🥶 wind in morning & night as this Northeastern region is slowly into winter season from Nov) & a pair of comfy shoes 👟 as you will exciting walk & follow the elephants for sure 😁 during the parade
Hmm…Personally, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻💖 appreciates the great 👍🏻 cultural values & historical re-enactments of this annual elephant festival celebration 🎉🎊 at Surin. It signifies the elephants’ pivotal roles in Thai history, serving in war battles, aiding in agriculture & facilitating travel, so to celebrate 🎉🎊 the importance & significance of Thai elephants to its Thai citizens, the Thai government has hosted this Surin Elephant Round-Up festival on an annual basis since 1960
She was with mixed feeling after she attended this festival personally, though she understands greater the history of the elephants & the local Thai community in Surin, it portrays it very well in the elephant cultural show during this festival. However she personally has observed some unpleasant treats from the mahouts to tame or instruct their elephants during the festival, so she just can’t say for sure 💯 that none of the elephants 🐘🐘 are mistreated as there were some circus-like display with the elephants performing tricks eg. The elephants painting artwork 🐘🎨🖌️, play football, throw darts at balloons etc. during the talent show 😌 The training for these probably ends up being fairly stressful for the elephants & something so unnatural for an elephant to do feels pretty distasteful personally. Hmm…Perhaps the elephants would be happier if the elephants didn’t have to perform…
Overall, she still recommends to at least experience once this annual Surin Elephant Festival ya 🇹🇭🐘💖
Do stay tuned for her next blog post on things to do at Surin, Sisaket & Buriram, the Northeastern of Thailand for your trip planning ya 😃😁
