World Asthma Day 2022 “Closing Gaps in Asthma Care”

Yeah‌ SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 would like to sharing here about her recent media attendance to witness the awareness conference on theme “Closing Gaps in Asthma Care” in conjunction with the World Asthma Day 2022

It was being officiated by YB Khairy Jamaluddin, the Minister of Health of Malaysia 🇲🇟 “For the past 2 years, we have been busy with the pandemic Covid-19. Now, as we transition to the endemic phase, it’s time that we go back to optimize the health care system. The Health Facts 2021 released in 2021 by the ministry has showed that the asthma-related deaths are the 2nd highest recorded at the government hospitals. This can be avoided through bridging the gaps in asthma care,” YB Khairy said at the conference

He has also thanked all Malaysians for adhering to Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP) during the current transition into the endemic phase, especially during the Raya festivities , yes, #kitajagakita

This World Asthma Day Conference 2022 was organized by Asthma Malaysia & Dr Helmy Haja Mydin, the Co-Founder of Asthma Malaysia. Asthma Malaysia is a non-profitable organization with the mission to serve as a credible resource on asthma, to raise awareness of best standards of care & to empower patients in the management of their asthma. Its vision is to be Malaysia’s leading portal for asthma with a view of creating more informed & empowered patients. Also aim to ensure that asthma care in Malaysia is equal to the best in the world with a view to reducing the suffering & deaths associated with it

World Asthma Day is an annual awareness event supported by Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), US based National Heart Lung & Blood Institute (NHLB) & the World Asthma Foundation. It aims to raising awareness of asthma & how it affects sufferers. The day falls on the 1⃣st Tuesday in May each year with aims to raising support for sufferers & their families. Asthma also is included in the WHO’s Global Action Plan for the Prevention & Control of NCDs & the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

SiennyLovesDrawing has learnt so much from her attendance at this half-day conference aimed to discuss the challenges & solutions in addressing the gaps in asthma care in Malaysia in line with the World Asthma Day 2022’s theme ~ Closing Gaps in Asthma Care ~ In Malaysia, asthma affects almost 2 million children & adults with respiratory diseases being the 2nd most common cause of death within the Ministry of Health hospitals[1]

However, the lack of recognition of asthma as an area of focus in the national healthcare agenda, in particular has been cited as one of the major barriers in enabling earlier & equitable access to both diagnosis & evidence-guided treatment among the asthma patients in the country[2]

This conference is held to commemorate the celebration of the World Asthma Day 2022 in collaboration with the Malaysian Thoracic Society (MTS), Malaysian Family Medicine Specialists’ Association (FMSA), Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS), Novartis Malaysia & AstraZeneca Malaysia

It started with the opening speech by Dr Helmy Haja Mydin, the Co-Founder of Asthma Malaysia. During this conference, healthcare experts, patient representatives & industry partners have come together to explore the potential of making asthma as a key non-communicable disease (NCD) priority area in Malaysia

The sessions are as follows,

  • Asthma Control: Paving the Way Towards Symptom-free Days , by the Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ernest Poh Mau Ern, Consultant Respiratory Physician, UMMC

Asthma & COVID-19

1. People with moderate to severe asthma may be at higher risk of getting very sick from COVID-19. COVID-19 which affects the respiratory system can cause an asthma exacerbation & possibly lead to pneumonia & acute respiratory disease[3].

2. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, GINA released some interim guidelines for asthmatics and physicians to adhere to as below[3]:

  • People with asthma should continue all their inhaled medication, including ICS, as prescribed by their doctor
  • In acute asthma attacks, patients should urgently see their healthcare provider to prevent escalation of the condition
  • Nebulisers should, where possible, be avoided for acute attacks due to the increased risk of dissemina:ting COVID-19 (to other patients and to physicians, nurses & other health personnel)

3. Pressurised metered dose inhaler (pMDI) via a spacer is the preferred treatment during severe attacks (spacers must not be shared at home)

4. While a patient is being treated for a severe attack, their maintenance inhaled asthma treatment should be continued (at home & in the hospital)

  • Patients with allergic rhinitis should continue to take their nasal corticosteroids, as prescribed by their clinician
  • Routine spirometry testing should be suspended to reduce the risk of viral transmission & if necessary, adequate infection control measures should be taken

Current Gaps in Asthma Care Worldwide

According to GINA, in addition to unequal access to diagnosis & treatment, the current gaps in asthma care exist[4]:

  • between care for different socio-economic, ethnic & age groups
  • between wealthy & poorer communities and countries
  • in communication & care across the primary / secondary/ tertiary care
  • in communication & education provided for people with asthma, (quality of asthma care plans)
  • in asthma knowledge & asthma awareness between health care providers
  • in prioritization between asthma & other long-term conditions
  • between prescribing inhalers & monitoring adherence & ability to use them
  • between the general public’s (non-asthmatics) & health care professionals’ understanding that asthma is a chronic (not acute) disease
  • between scientific evidence & actual delivery of care for people with asthma

Hmm…SiennyLovesDrawing actually wishes to retire early, yes ✅, since she has graduated & starting to work 👩🏻‍💻, this is a life goal 🎯 that she is working on. It means good financial habits count, be discipline in your budget set, not wasting money unnecessarily etc. Some of her tips are reduce eating out, no unnecessarily phone upgrades, unnecessarily clothing & apparel shopping, not to opt for extended warranties & not to fall into emotional impulse shopping etc.

Apart from the major concern ie. Enough financial to support early retirement, the rule of thumb widely recognised is only withdraw 4% from retirement savings each year

Personally to her, enough meant differently by each retirees, if you can be living on a lower budget that you’re comfortably adapting to, without any luxury elements, then your “enough” for early retirement surely more achievable, as compared to those that wish to enjoy a more luxury comfortable retirement life. So, a honest & reality self reflect is required to consider your retirement lifestyle, current or long term healthcare needs, living downsizing etc. ya 💪🏻🙌🏻👍🏻

The important factor that drives her to achieving early retirement is what she is gonna do to fill her time after retire. Once retired, it means literally you have extra hours of 9 to 5 on your own, no need answering to many bosses, hurray‌ She knows herself well that she needs to keep her time occupied, she just can’t be doing nothing for a long time, she just can’t, lol 😆

Frankly, initially when she wishes to retire early, so she can backpacking around the world 🎒🌎, however with the global health pandemic now, she needs to pen down what she is gonna do instead before her long backpacking journey then

Let’s start to craft out an actual plan for your post-retirement years OR plan a fun bucket list that you can happily tick off after each exciting completion during your retirement

It’s just a new 🆕 beginning after your retirement, enjoy new 🆕 life for your own self. It’s a 2nd chance for all retirees to live life to its fullest to stay happy vital
