Sunway Hotel’s Halal Practices & Hotel Food Waste Management

All attendees got to experience the green meeting facilities in Arena meeting room of Sunway Resort Hotel

As a go green supporter, SiennyLovesDrawing enjoyed her 1️⃣st green meeting & observed some great sustainability efforts ♻️💚✅👍🏻

✅ Glass water containers & cups replacing single use plastic
✅ Papers supply at a destinated corner in the meeting room, upon usage required, instead of distribute on each seat
✅ Snacks & sweets in reusable container eg. No more Mentos sweets to reduce single use plastic packaging etc.
✅ Food on Food concept: Repurpose the fruits skin as fruits containers
✅ Sunway Group owns a water treatment plant to source own clean drinkable treatment water for Sunway City’s water usage
✅ Usage of food waste composting machine

All attendees got to understand, then tour & gain experience a hotel’s sustainable food waste management practices. Also learning more insights into a Silver Muslim-Friendly Accommodation Recognition (MFAR) hotel’s sustainability efforts in managing food waste, as well as halal foods preparation for Muslims guests

Then, to visit the segregated halal kitchen & the food waste composting machine. It’s really impressive that with proper food waste management, the compost can be used as fertilizer in plantations ♻️💚💪🏻👏🏻👍🏻

SiennyLovesDrawing has learnt that 150kg food waste required for at least 18 to 24 hours compost process in this 300 litres machine. It depends on food waste put inside the machine, no specific measurements, if fruits skin a lot, the compost will be watery & hence it will take longer time to compost. Food scrap includes food being touched but not finished & food waste from food preparation

Places To Visit & Things To Do

Kampung Tasek, Pengkalan Hulu

It’s a Siamese village where approximately 90% residents here are Siamese, while 5% Chinese & 5% Indian

This village very near to Thailand 🇹🇭 border to arrive at Betong city of Thailand, a Thai food paradise ya 😋👍🏻

Durian Orchards, Kampung Tasek

It’s a huge area with different local owners of durian orchards here. Hmm… It’s kind of special to visit a durian orchard while not the durian season, so a different way to appreciate the greenery of durian trees here. The durian varieties here are Musang King & Blackthorn in season annually ~ July & August. She understands that the gross profit of kampung durian approximately RM500/ tree vs the gross profit of Musang King approximately RM2k/tree. So, priority to plant Musang King durian trees here with aims to increase ⬆️ the community living in this Kampung Tasek

SiennyLovesDrawing has learnt that the durian trees will get disease equivalent to cancer if not take care properly during her visit here

It would be great 👍🏻 excitements to revisit a huge 500 acres (⬆️ acre approximately 33 trees) orchard owned by Bina Terra Sdn Bhd to enjoy the durian fruits here the coming durian season of July to Aug annually. According to Mr Ken Leong of Bina Terra Sdn Bhd, it took 4 to 5 years to start for plantation. Its weather cooling especially at night here, it’s suitable for durian plantation. There are 5 zones ie. Zones A to E for scheduling of durian plantation, however with same harvesting time & year 2022 is the 1st year of fruit production. It’s for local supplies & international market for durian exporting market ie. China 🇨🇳, Singapore 🇸🇬 , Thailand 🇹🇭 etc. In long term planning of building a process durian factory 🏭 & a village homestay here as explained by Mr Ken

Also visited a durian processing factory that actually then exported the durian fruits to overseas. It’s amazingly learnt that freeze technology actually can keep the freshness of the local fruits, especially when her travel mate shown to SiennyLovesDrawing a frozen mangosteen 🤩😋👍🏻 Advanced technology in food industry adopted here. All with vacuum packed as the oxygen from the air will make the durian sour tastes for export market

Do contact Majlis Perbandaran Pengkalan Hulu (Details below) for arrangements if you wish to have a group tour visiting ya

Lastly, we stopped by Tasik Ceria Agro Farm (It’s 9️⃣ acres & already more than 30 years) which is a famous spot during the durian seasons (Late May to late July) to enjoy fresh durian Musang King, D24, Blackthorn etc. under the tree 🌳🌳 or with a tent. Visitors can walk in to enjoy durian eating with no min headcount & just pay what you have eaten according to market price. It also provides packages here with durian feast & local Thai village dishes by local chefs for a group package of at least 20pax, advance booking is required. The founder, Mr Ooi has informed that the durian Blackthorn here won awards from the Jabatan Pertanian Hulu Perak with its durian colour, taste, creamy & stickyness

Istana Singgah Raja Reman, Pengkalan Hulu

It’s a wooden palace with more than 💯 years ago of an ancient kingdom called the Kingdom of Reman or Kingdom of Rahman (1810 to 1920), 1️⃣ of the 7️⃣ regions of Pattani Kingdom. This palace was also used as a stopover place for the descendants of King Reman to visit his conquered colonies in the northern region

However, on 16 July 1909, the surrender of Reman District to the state of Perak took place at Kroh (NKA Pengkalan Hulu) as a result of the intervention of the Siamese & British Governments. Read more about Kingdom of Reman via 🌐

This is the 1️⃣st time SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 actually visited a wooden palace 👑

This wooden palace is now managed by the 7️⃣the generation of Tengku Putra as a gallery, the only treasure from King Reman that left for his descendants. From her recent visit, she understands that some of the valuable items that are the treasures of the family of King Reman’s descendants have been taken by their relatives & descendants who live all over Malaysia & some in Thailand to keep as souvenirs

According to the gallery management, entrance is currently 🆓, however admission fee may apply in the future. So, quick quick plan your gallery visit whenever you’re at Pengkalan Hulu ya 😁

Malaysia-Thailand Border Stone 1968 Kroh ~ Betong Tragedy Memorial Site

It’s important to remember the services of the heroes who died defending the country from the enemy once upon a time. This bloody incident occurred on 20 July 1979, when a convoy transporting patients from Baling to Kroh was ambushed by a group of communist terrorists. The convoy that was attacked consisted of an ambulance, a military truck and two military Land Rover vehicles. The communist attack left three soldiers and two civilians dead

Rumah Ayah An Rusa & Kelulut 🦌🐝

Visitors can enjoy light meals with tame friendly deers 🦌🦌(Themoressis deer from Nusantara Indonesia 🇮🇩) surrounding you here with a fee, it’s an exciting experience, SiennyLovesDrawing kept lol 😆 when the deer 🦌🦌 kiss her hand to get the organic pallets 😂🤣😄 Ha…Ha…Ha…

Each of the deers here with a name given by the founder, Ms Herlyza ‘s mum eg. A 3️⃣ years old deer named Rama Rama. Each can be recognized from the behaviors of each deer 🦌 When started, initially with 2️⃣ female deers, then now with 11 female deers & 3️⃣ male deers

Some of the interesting facts that she has learnt during her visit are;

  • Female deer needs to have heart or love 💕 the male deer 🦌 1st, to release hormones to attract the male deer 🦌, then only the deer breeding happens. Baby deer max with 2️⃣ deer each time ie. Twin babies deer
  • Pregnant deer until 7️⃣ months still unable to tell from appearance, only can tell a little fat from its normal size
  • A week before give birth, the breasts of the female deer will be swollen

There is a small garden here with stingless bees (Kelulut Itama) honey 🍯 available ✅ for tasting & purchase

Do check out her happy visit with exciting deer feeding 🦌😆 & honey tasting 🍯🐝😋👍🏻 TikTok clip captured via 📹🌐

Food 😋🤤

Restoran Selera Terapong

The local Siamese dishes served here just so tasty delicious 😋🤤 to enjoy with a nice lake scenery of Takong Lake. YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy said: “The enormous 2 billion Muslim population worldwide is driving a 🆕 & significant segment of Muslim travellers, which will positively impact the overall tourism industry, especially critical now as we work hard towards industry & economic recovery. The demand for Muslim-friendly tourism products & services to satisfy their leisure, business, spiritual & healthcare travel needs gives impetus to develop the tourism supply chain across all sectors.” She explained

She further explained that the Islamic Tourism ecosystem is closely connected with other tourism segments & major economic sectors & that the growth & development of the Muslim tourist market would sustain sectors such as banking, finance & insurance through payment gateways, digital wallets & travel insurance products for the needs of this market

She also noted the potential demand ensuing from the rise of this tourist market in terms of Muslimah fashion & active wear, cosmetics, green technology, Muslim-friendly media, digital entertainment & recreation & Halal pharmaceuticals, medical & wellness products & services. This is in line with key strategies outlined in Malaysia’s National Tourism Policy (NTP) 2020-2030 in developing Islamic Tourism in Malaysia 🇲🇾

“There are many opportunities for the tourism industry players & entrepreneurs to take advantage of this development & create products & services for this market. Increased Islamic Tourism activities drive product innovation & diversification, entrepreneurial opportunities & job creation, thus paving the way for people to live improved, enriched & financially stable lives.” She said

“Industry players in both the public & private sectors need to look into this demand, learn about the market needs & fill in the gaps in the form of investment, product & package development, policies & incentives. The tourism industry needs to be re-energised with 🆕 ideas & not to fall back on the old way of doing things. This 3️⃣-day conference is a great platform to explore the Islamic Tourism potential further.” She has added

Malaysia’s development of Islamic Tourism began with the establishment of ITC in 2009 under the purview of MOTAC. Since then, ITC has provided research, training, capacity building & standards & certification to help strengthen the Islamic Tourism ecosystem in Malaysia 🇲🇾 & abroad. It also championed the development of Mosque 🕌 Tourism to not only showcase the culture, heritage & history of the local Muslim community, but also as a means to expand the economic activities & income potential of the mosque institution through mosque cooperatives & waqf

ITC also identified potential jobs & career paths within the Islamic Tourism ecosystem. It advocated for the role of the Halal Executive in hotels to ensure standards compliance & helped create a need for male spa therapists, Muslim-Friendly Tourist Guides & Mosque Volunteers. All these attests to the Islamic Tourism sector’s ability to create 🆕 employment opportunities for Malaysians & support the industry’s human capital development & supply chain

Through its information gathering, research & data analysis, ITC helped to improve the evidence base for Islamic Tourism to formulate policy & make business decisions

A special address by Tan Sri Dr. Mohd. Daud Bakar, Chairman of Shariah Advisory Council, Bank Negara Malaysia, on “Islamic Tourism Inspires Balance, Transformations & Solutions in Today’s Economy” ie. This Malaysia’s signature Islamic Tourism business event, WITC’s theme for this year

The theme signified the need to strike a balance in tourism development that would lead to transformative thinking & actions when searching for the right solutions from an Islamic perspective. Also to complement the global efforts to restore the tourism industry & the economy.

There are approximately 40 speakers from Malaysia 🇲🇾, Bosnia-Herzegovina 🇧🇦, Canada 🇨🇦, the Netherlands 🇳🇱, Singapore 🇸🇬, Thailand 🇹🇭, Turkiye 🇹🇷 & Uzbekistan 🇺🇿 were invited to share their thoughts & expertise with the audience. Topics of discussions ranged from destination showcase, economy, urban challenges & sustainability, technology, cultural exchange, education, as well as standards & certification 👍🏻

During this conference, there were signing ceremony for Memorandums of Understanding with aims to advance the Islamic Tourism development further. YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Haji Shukri has witnessed the MOUs signing ceremony

  • ITC with Malaysian Association of Tour & Travel Agents (MATTA) ~ To support the Government’s inbound tourism programs
  • ITC with TUI International Holiday (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd~ To strengthen Malaysia’s 🇲🇾 positioning as a Muslims friendly holiday destination

YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Mohmed Razip Haji Hasan, Director-General of ITC is expected to close the conference with a wrap-up session & closing remarks on the last day of the conference ie. 19 Oct 2022

So, what’s the Muslims tourists market potential❓⁉️

The ITC Director-General, Dato’ Dr. Mohmed Razip Hasan 👨🏽‍💼 said “1️⃣ of the things that ITC has been observing & tracking is the growth of the Muslims tourists market. Malaysia 🇲🇾 has been seeing its healthy rise up ⬆️ until 2019 before the pandemic broke. It contributed approximately a 20% share to Malaysia’s tourist arrivals & tourist receipts. It’s a dynamic market.”
“With people travelling again now, so are the Muslims tourists. It’s a key market to look into & 1️⃣ of the reasons is because they are geographically well distributed in Southeast Asia & Europe, not just the Middle East. You can say it is a global tourists market, protected from location-specific disruptions,” Dr. Mohmed Razip Hasan 👨🏽‍💼 explained

The conference’s theme for 2022 ~ “Islamic Tourism: Inspiring Balance, Transformations & Solutions,” ~ was chosen to re-energise & motivate tourism industry players towards strategic action & tourism recovery by viewing the Muslims tourists market potential as a socio-economic driver

Dato’ Dr. Mohmed Razip Hasan 👨🏽‍💼 said “We chose this theme because we want to influence a 🆕 way of thinking. The thinking must change & followed up with synergistic & collaborative action. We don’t want anyone to be left behind or miss this opportunity.”
Dato’ Dr. Mohmed Razip Hasan 👨🏽‍💼 further explained “As we move into the tourism recovery phase now, it’s critical for destinations & tourism industry players to gain their footing in the market & make a big push forward. But the tourism scenario now is different from before the pandemic. We are faced with 🆕 tourism preferences, advancements in technology, a changing workforce & working trends, climate issues, geopolitical challenges & more. Industry players need the knowledge & a different way of thinking to thrive in this post-pandemic environment. The WITC conference will bring together some of the best minds from various industry backgrounds to weigh in on the matter.”
“There are vast benefits in tourism, specifically when we deliver to the burgeoning Muslim tourist market. 🆕 businesses can evolve, products & services can expand, 🆕 jobs can be created, more people can benefit,” Dato’ Dr. Mohmed Razip Hasan 👨🏽‍💼 said

“More importantly, Islamic Tourism strives to bring 🆕 perspectives which promote a healthy Human Development Index (HDI) consisting of excellent healthcare, education & decent standard of living & a focus on ESG (Environment, Social & Governance), through best practices within the supply chains in the tourism, travel & hospitality segment.”
“To add value to the WITC brand, this year, we’re introducing an exhibition element to the conference. About 50 to 80 tourism businesses, products & services will be showcased. It’s an opportunity to connect & collaborate with tourism industry players,” Dato’ Dr. Mohmed Razip added

Not just that, in 2013, UTP has engaged with FRIM to protect 4️⃣ endangered tree 🌳🌳 species namely Vatica Flavida (Resak Padi), Shorea Hemsleyana (Cengal Pasir Daun Besar), Shorea Macrantha (Kepong Hantu) & Aquilaria Malaccensis (Karas) that have been touted as Malaysia’s 🇲🇾 heritage. It’s now an important conservation area for these threatened Dipterocarpaceae

There are on going efforts to reserve these endangered species trees 🌳🌳 with proper labels to avoid them being cut for future campus development

UTP trail is with sponsorship from Yayasan PETRONAS to invest in building the board walk that is friendly for both senior citizens & kids as an educational trail with the displays of information boards

Suggestions from the media members that for UTP to have parents & kids to visit, also to work with MNS Society, as well as collaborate with nature guides etc. on this UTP Trail once it’s ready to open to public then
