Nostalgia Experience With North Borneo Heritage Steam Train, Sabah, Malaysia

Continue from SiennyLovesDrawing’s 👩🏻 earlier blog post that she is back again to Sabah, Malaysia 🇲🇾 to enjoy a holiday & enjoyed max the adventurous extreme sports ~ Paragliding 🪂🏞️🇲🇾 @ 📍 Ranau Paragliding Park, read more via 🌐  https://siennylovesdrawing.wordpress.com/2024/03/17/amazing-1st-paragliding-experience-with-flynow-ranau-paragliding-sabah-malaysia/

Hmm…If you’ve noted her handrawn doodle art for Fly Me To Sabah, both the paragliding 🪂 & steam train 🚂 actually on her artwork, just that she didn’t get to complete all her Sabah travel bucket list & hence this so called her 2024 birthday trip to Sabah aims to complete them all 👩🏻🎂🎊🎉✨🥳🎈

So so happy that this time she got ticked off ✅ another wish list ie. To ride on the North Borneo Heritage Steam Train🚂, yeah 💯😃😁👍🏻

Sabah State Railway aka Jabatan Keretapi Negeri Sabah (JKNS), FKA North Borneo Railway is a railway system & operator in the state of Sabah in Malaysia 🇲🇾 It is the only rail transport system operating on the island of Borneo

This steam train 🚂 was made by Vulcan Foundry Ltd in Newton-le-Willows in Lancashire, United Kingdom 🇬🇧 in 1955 for North Borneo Railway. It’s 1️⃣ of the few functional locomotives powered by burning wood 🪵 They don’t use coal that produces very fine ash powder which would cause black stains on your shirt 👕👚 It’s an iconic hybrid steam engine train 🚂 that was once a key trade route in the days of British 🇬🇧 colonial rule & still remain as the only railway on Borneo island. The exterior of the steam train is in deep green & cream colors, ie. the original colours used in old days. The windows 🪟 are open all the time for a more enjoyable experience. While the interior is natural wooded seat & there are cooling by ceiling fans. This train has 5️⃣ Japanese-designed carriages that each can accommodate 16 passengers, with a total train capacity of 80 passengers that have been meticulously restored & renovated to reflect the era of the classical steam train 🚂

The railway service of Borneo is 1️⃣st started by William Clarke Cowie, Managing Director of the British North Borneo Chartered Company in 1896. It’s a memory lane with history that involves Bruneians, British, Japanese, Australians & forebears of Sabah Chinese. From 1888 to 1963, Sabah (Then, North Borneo) was colonised by the British empire, as part of their economic plan to build a kingdom that never sleeps. The construction of this railway in 1896 is a major development that transformed the wild West Coast of Sabah into a belt of prosperity as this 134km Borneo railway helps to open up more lands & forms the lifeline of the west coast. Cargo after cargo of tobacco, rubber, paddy 🌾, coffee ☕, timber 🪵 & other agricultural products were transported from the fertile inland to the harbour of Jesselton (NKA Kota Kinabalu City or KK). Colonial townships such as Kinarut, Papar, Beaufort & Tenom also sprouted up along the railway 🚃 This single 134-kilometre railway line 🛤️ from Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu in West Coast Division to the town of Tenom, in the Interior Division of Sabah

SiennyLovesDrawing Sabah travel bucket list

The North Borneo Heritage Train (FKA North Borneo Railway) features a hybrid locomotive in which the engine can run on either steam ♨️ from a boiler or diesel fuel

It’s refurbished to create the nostalgic romance of the bygone era of the Colonial days of British North Borneo, the train 🚂 allows all its passengers to experience the beauty of the Sabah’s countryside & the unique sights and sounds of the Sabah landscape on board this heritage vintage train, a must have experience 💯👍🏻

Passengers are offered 🆓 seating on one of the 5️⃣ colonial-style train carriages. Each carriage provides the amenity of a modern unisex washroom 🚻🚾🚽

It accommodates 32 passengers in each carriage, with a total train capacity of 160 passengers

The train windows 🪟 remain open throughout the journey to enhance the overall heritage experience. Also with high-powered fans line the ceilings to ensure maximum comfort for all its passengers

The train 🚂 runs every Wednesday only. It runs 36 miles from Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of Sabah & then stopped at Papar, an agricultural town, known as the rice bowl 🌾🍚 of Sabah for lunch & sightseeing activities

So, this train departs sharp at 9am from Tanjung Aru Station & each passenger received a Sabah paper bag filled with light refreshments to enjoy during the ride, hand sanitizer, face mask & a little Sabah souvenir 🎁 All will enjoy wind your way through scenic landscapes on the only railway track in Sabah since 1896. This 134 km line stretches south from Kota Kinabalu to Tenom (Pangi Station). It’s actually originally used to transport tobacco to the coast, at present it serves as a vital public transport for the locals

Tanjung Aru

After breakfast ☕🍽️🥪🍳 at Flypod Restaurant, SiennyLovesDrawing slowly walking 🚶🏻‍♀️& then joined in with other registered passengers to on board to this heritage train 🚂 at Tanjung Aru Station at the designated platform

At the station, all its passengers will receive respective boarding pass & a train passport book (Task mission book 📖 to complete 🔟 missions) at the counter before proceeding to the platform. As the whistle blows during departure time, the train will commence its journey while passengers are treated to some of the unique & interesting sceneries in Sabah from the train window 🪟

Putata

As the train pulls out of the station, the development of Kota Kinabalu begins to slip away. Time & history begin to take over. After Putatan, the train veers into the countryside, away from the modern-day trapping of Sabah society. The train hugs the coast of Lok Kawi Bay & offers passengers an opportunity to take in the picturesque view of the South China Sea 🌊

Kinarut

The name Kinarut derived from the words ‘China Road’. From the train 🚂 , you can view the large Tien Nam Shi Toaism Temple ⛩️ (镇南寺) that worships Guang Ze Zun Wang (广泽尊王). Chinese immigrants didn’t have an easy life in Borneo. In some estates, their mortality rate could reach 40% due to ill treatment & poor living environment. Religion would offer them some comfort

The train then leaves the road & edges towards Kinarut, a traditional trading village. A school 🏫 stands proudly in the forefront, reminding everyone of the importance of education. A mosque 🕌 also stands near the station, highlighting the influence of the national religion. An interesting Buddhist temple ⛩️ appears at the foot of the nearby hill

SiennyLovesDrawing & other passengers 🧑🏻‍🤝‍🧑🏻👭🏻👬🏻👫🏻 got to get down at this Kinarut station to take some photos 📸🤳🏻 Just merely approximately 15mins stop by only, so she doesn’t have time to explore this small town

Kawang

After Kinarut, the train passes through Kawang, home to Kawang Forest Reserve 🌳🌳 which being azetted as a Second Class Domestic Forest Reserve. Its main purpose is to supply clean water 💦 for locals in the vicinity. The centre also offers a myriad of activities, from jungle trekking & camping 🏕️ 🥾 to cave exploration

Papar

The train veers again & crosses the Papar River 🏞️ over a steel trestle bridge 🌉 as Papar town comes into view. A quaint township, Papar is wedged in the valley between the Crocker Range & the coast. Here, everyone is a neighbour & the intimacy is clear with their dispositions & smiles 😁 The local market or tamu is a reflection of life in Sabah ~ A simple & alive with the sounds & smells of recurrent daily routines

SiennyLovesDrawing enjoyed chitchatting with the locals especially at the fish 🐟 wet market aka Pasar Ikan, the locals so welcoming friendly & offered her some of the fresh fishes to take photos 🤳🏻📸 hahaha 🤣 😂

Also enjoyed viewing the well maintained vintage shop houses that lace the charming small town. Also not to forget to explore some exciting spots around Papar town to complete the mission book 📖, yes ✅, a treasure hunt activity to enjoy 😁

There will be a tour guide from the Kinabalu Heritage Tour company to lead the way to explore Papar Town. During SiennyLovesDrawing’s recent tour, she was guided by a friendly Mr Carpet 🙋🏻‍♂️ The 1️⃣st stop we went to Majlis Bandaran Papar to take photos/ videos with 📸📹 the heritage old train 🚂 Then, went to claim a 🆓 traditional local ice cream 🍦 at Perniagaan Bee Hong & enjoyed while walking 🚶🏻‍♀️to explore the town

After visited to a Chinese temple ⛩️ & Papar Riverfront, she was invited to enjoy a delicious lunch ie. Ayam Penyet rice set with a glass of refreshing tasty Kitchai drink in a local restaurant named Kak Anna Restaurant 🍽️🍛💯👍🏻, instead of lunch in the train ya 🚂  She was told this was a suggestion from earlier tourists that dining in train 🚂 quite shaking during the train moving, some felt dizzy 😵 🥴, hence now dining at Papar town instead 💯👍🏻

After lunch, slowly walking back to Papar station 🚶🏻‍♀️🚉 to on board the train which scheduled to depart at 12.30pm to then relax a return journey to Tanjung Aru Station. During this train journey, each passengers get to take part in the simple henna tattoo-making activity (Just using a sticker with different designs to pick & paint henna paint on it) while indulging in the afternoon tea served onboard ie. A small packet of local fruits ie. Mata Kucing, a pack of strawberry jam biscuits 🍪 & a bottle of mineral water 💦😋

This whole adventure will conclude when the train 🚂 safely return to Tanjung Aru Station & SiennyLovesDrawing slowly walking 🚶🏻‍♀️ back to her hotel room at Flypod hotel 🏨🛏️ to shower & rest before her return flight ✈️ to home sweet home that evening 🌆✨

She was told that the fee of this heritage train tour includes hotel pickup & dropoff 🚌 directly to Tanjung Aru Train Station (seat-in-coach), train ticket 🎟️, Train Passport ie. Mission Book 📖, Treasure Hunt Activity, Henna Tattoo Activity, Goodies, ice cream 🍦, Meals & snacks during the journey

Note 📌: This tour fee excludes Tour Guide, Alcoholic Drinks, Personal Expenses & Personal Travel Insurance

Suggest to wear comfortable walking shoe 👟, bring along umbrella 🌂, cap 🧢 or hat 👒, phone 📱🤳🏻, camera 📸

So, what are you waiting for ❓⁉️

If you’re travelling in Sabah, be sure to add this heritage element into your itinerary, highly recommend it 👩🏻💯👍🏻 that you all don’t wanna miss it in case steam train 🚂 is no longer working then

This heritage tour involves lot of walking & hence not recommended for pregnant 🤰 women & those with disabilities/ mobility concerns ♿️🦽🦼 suggest must have a caregiver accompanied with them at all times for assistance

Additional safety notes from SiennyLovesDrawing’s personal travel experience;

  • Keep away from the edge ~ Don’t stand too close to the edge of the platform, regardless of whether there is a train 🚂 coming or not. Always stand behind the yellow 💛 lines
  • Stand clear of closing doors ~ Whether you’re trying to get on or off a train, don’t make a rush for closing doors. You or your luggage could get trapped
  • Keep children under close supervision at all times on the train & waitin at the platform. Hold on to your pushchair or pram (if using) & use the brake when possible
  • Don’t block doors or aisles & keep your luggage in the designated areas
  • Mind the gap between the train 🚂 & the platform 🚉
  • Pay attention to train public announcements
  • If you are standing, hold on to a pole or similar when the train 🚂 start & stops
  • You may take photographs or videos for your personal use only. Commercial photography needs prior permission from JKNS
  • Flash photography ❌📸 is not allowed. It could distract train drivers & platform staff ~ A potential safety hazard. You might be asked not to use a tripod at busy stations, as it could cause an obstruction. You must keep tripod legs away from the platform edge & behind the yellow 💛 line
  • Be careful when crossing the road & always keep your belongings attended when exploring Papar Town
  • Do pay attention to the announcement by the Tour Guide on duty
  • All guests are required to behave & with respectful manner when visiting religious destinations

Amazing 1st Paragliding Experience With FLYNOW Ranau Paragliding, Sabah, Malaysia

SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 is back again to Sabah, Malaysia 🇲🇾 to enjoy a holiday, this time she has opted for some adventurous extreme sports that she always wanna to do & now travel bucket to-do list ✅, do stay tuned for more of her next blog posts ya 😃😁

“Yeah‼️ I wish I can fly & now I’m flying high at Ranau Paragliding Park, Sabah 🪂🏞️🇲🇾” SiennyLovesDrawing shouted with excitement in her heart 👩🏻😁❤️ when she enjoys this adrenaline-pumping adventure ~ paragliding for the 1️⃣st time in her life

More importantly, the best thing about opting paragliding here is that no ❌ prior knowledge is required for any guests joining this extreme sport activity. It’s because tandem paragliding ie. With experienced & professional tandem pilot who will guide each guest through all the steps & fly together gather to ensure 💯safety throughout

As SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 glides through the air with her tandem pilot named Didi, a native Dusun tribe with more than 7️⃣ years of paragliding experiences, yeah💯👍🏻 She has witnessed Ranau’s natural beauty & diverse terrain including back-country footpaths, city streets & canal towpaths etc.

This makes her paragliding experience amazing & great 👍🏻 especially with the perfect backdrop ~ Ranau is surrounded by lush greenery, clear rivers & mountain ⛰️ ranges, which makes it perfect 🤩👍🏻 for adventure lovers to soar through the air at a height of 2,200ft to enjoy a magnificent bird’s 🐦 eye view of the land below ~  For this exhilarating paragliding adventure from a unique perspective

Yes ✅, up high, she soars through the skies feeling the wind in her 🆕 short hair style & experience the thrill of flying while enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Kinabalu ⛰️ & the rest of the mountains valleys as she navigates the skies with excellent 👍🏻 guidance from her tandem pilot 🪂🙋🏽‍♂️

The paraglider holds the pilot, Didi & the passenger ie. SiennyLovesDrawing from above & hence, herself as the passenger will lose a direct connection to the ground during the flight. This feeling of weightlessness & the effortless ascent to heights can help her to overcome fear of heights & then experience a deep sense of relaxation. In fact, she loves how naturally she took off the ground by her tandem pilot in the beginning, the wind helps for sure & both of them don’t require to run to take off, yeah the best 💯👍🏻

From her great 👍🏻 1️⃣st paragliding experience here at Ranau Paragliding Park 🏞️🪂, she learnt that paragliding really depends on the wind. So, if the wind wasn’t in favour, then she may need to wait till wind is available ✅, then only to fly. She was in a 4×4 1️⃣st by FLYNOW team to drive up to the take off point together with another 2️⃣ participants ie. Mr Matthew & Ms Penny from Sibu, Sarawak. Ohh ya…She was told that very much depending on the wind, at times may land in a different spot & not to worry as the FLYNOW team will pick up accordingly to the base after each of the paragliding session then 😁

Hmm…A personal advice, if you’re coming for this extreme sport, do spare more time as you might not be able to take off if the wind or weather is not suitable. If so, you can go visit other places & then the FLYNOW team will call you when the time is right to fly. Hmm…In a way, the more you wait, the more you value each moment you get, when the right time comes ☺️ It’s absolutely worth the wait ya 😃😁

SiennyLovesDrawing felt blessed 👩🏻😇 as the wind was in favour during her paragliding session today, superb smooth, thank you for everything ya 🙏🏻💖💯

What To Prepare

  • Wear comfortable & light clothing 👕 (Preferably dri-fit material)

She doesn’t experience any plummeting feeling that makes her nervous. In fact, she felt that she flown naturally off the ground 👩🏻😃💯👍🏻 A special thank you to her tandem pilot, Didi 🙏🏻💖🪂🙋🏽‍♂️
  • Then, she was asked to lift up her legs 🦵🏻 & straight legs in front during her landing
  • Helmets ⛑️🪖 must be worn on all flights. In addition, visibility during flight should not be less than 1800m
  • She was on a join-in basis of shared guide & 4×4 transportation to the take off point
  • The maximum capacity for paragliding is 120kg (Adult + Pilot). If overweight & wish to fly, may be subject to an additional surcharge. The maximum weight per child is 20kg

Ranau Paragliding Park is a 1️⃣-of-a-kind adventure destination 📍in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah 🇲🇾 that offers a range of exciting activities to thrill-seekers & nature lovers 💚🏞️🌳🌳

From SiennyLovesDrawing’s own paragliding experience, for sure you will gain an unforgettable experience viewing the beautiful nature of Sabah while paragliding here, just like herself

Ohh ya…Just that towards the end of the paragliding journey & preparation to land, her tandem pilot actually swings almost 360 degree 👩🏻😲 & that’s when SiennyLovesDrawing felt nervous 😰😳 & closed her eyes, hahaha 🤣😂 She even felt dizzy 😵🥴 too

She actually appreciate that her tandem pilot 🪂🙋🏽‍♂️ actually explained to her prior to prepare her whenever he needs to fly higher & require to swing to balance ie. That’s the way to landing & she did feel the strong wind towards landing time

She has landed safely & special thanks 🙏🏻💖 to her tandem pilot, Didi for this great 💯👍🏻 paragliding experience, it’s definitely a memorable lifetime 1️⃣st paragliding experience gained

  4. Kelanang Beach ⛱️ 🏖️ is a laid back & relaxing place to enjoy fresh sea breezes 🌊🌬️ & feel sand between your toes, even if the sand is of the brown 🤎 & muddy variety. It’s natural for the coastline on this stretch of the Strait of Malacca to be brown 🤎 as the mouth of the Langat River disgorges its constant flow of silt just 2️⃣km away, while the busy port of Klang. The beach is protected from erosion by a barrier of giant sand bags which form a kind of lagoon when the tide is right 💯👍🏻

Aka Istana Alaeddin or Alaeddin Palace, the building was constructed using high-quality Chengal timber & marble. Its design is largely Islamic, mainly of Indian & Middle-Eastern origin with some Chinese influence (The roof’s carved fascia board & dragon fin), as craftsmen from China were involved in the palace’s construction. The double-storey structure has many rooms, including a royal bath (Kolam Mandi Diraja), throne room (Balai Rong Seri), banquet room (Kamar Santap Diraja), bedrooms (Kamar Beradu), audience halls (Balai Mengadap), verandah (Sotoh), kitchen (Dapur) & a “forbidden garden” (Taman Larangan). It fell into disuse after independence, when the state administrative centre was moved to Kuala Lumpur. Then, later it used as a craft centre & Quran study centre, the central religious text of Islam
  6. Mah Meri Cultural Village 🏝️ ~ The ancient Mah Meri tribe aka the “Masked Men of Malaysia 🇲🇾🎭” is 1️⃣ of 18 indigenous communities living in Peninsula Malaysia as they are widely regarded as highly-skilled mask makers. Guess what❓⁉️ Some of their handicraft masks 🎭 have been known to fetch thousands of dollars , wow 😯😲 The Mah Meri tribe women are extremely adept at palm weaving. Visitors get to learn from them how to making headdresses or other decorative items made of palm fronds. Yeah‼️ A fruitful day ended with a nice dinner 🍽️ at Hotel Puncak Inn, shower 🚿, chit chat with her roommate & then rest early for the night 🛌🏻😴

The next day morning, she went to explore some interesting places with her other media members, do stay tuned for her next blog story about things to do @ Fraser’s Hill, Pahang, Malaysia ya 😁

She then back to Hotel Shahzan Inn 🏨 to check out & had a good lunch at Hotel Puncak Inn 🍽️

It’s themed gold & black 🖤💛 this ceremony & it was held at Magica Hall, Quill City Mall with aims to appreciate the media’s role in improving the promotion & marketing of Tourism Malaysia throughout its 50 years of existence through the Malaysia Truly Asia campaign for the international market & domestic market #cuticutimalaysia

The ceremony was attended by YBhg. Datuk Hajah Saraya Arbi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture (MOTAC) & Dato’ Haji Zainuddin Abdul Wahab, Director General of Tourism Malaysia

Dato’ Zainuddin said, since its launch in 1999, the Malaysia Truly Asia campaign, for example, has won more than 25 awards at the international level, thus successfully boosting the arrival of foreign tourists to Malaysia 💕🇲🇾👍🏻

“As of last September, Malaysia has recorded the arrival of more than 5.5 million tourists. We are optimistic to reach the target of 9.2 million tourists with a tourism income of RM26.8 billion by the end of this year. In fact, according to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international tourism continues to show signs of strong industry recovery when it returns to record tourist arrivals reaching 57% during the pre-pandemic for the 1st 7 months of this year,” said Dato’ Zainuddin

At the ceremony, in addition to the lucky draw 🎁🎁, all invited guests were also entertained with a cabaret performance 💃🕺 & a medley of Tourism Malaysia promotional campaign songs 🎤👄🎵🎶 under the coordination of Istana Budaya Dance Artists as well as the appearance of popular guest artists, Ms Ernie Zakri & Mr Khai Bahar

2. Istana Lemuni

You all have to book in advance & enjoy a great 👍🏻 pure traditional Malay cuisine (Northern, Southern or Pantai Timur sets) served here in its beautiful palace & royal families wooden houses (Aka Rumah Tela in Malaysia’s national language) here

“It’s all started actually as the weekend houses for the family, then the kitchen for family gatherings during weekends here. Visitors to Janda Baik actually then passing by & stopping by to take photos & videos. Many people were asking why they were not open to the public, so here it is now a dining place named Istana Lemuni (It’s with Istana Tiang 16, opening soon).” Explained by the passionate friendly & welcoming Datin Hasma Ahmad to SiennyLovesDrawing & her travel mates during her recent dining

So, it started with initially open 2018 for private function with BBQ dinner, then lunch, as the family background is with engineering automotive & retail company, not really into F&B businesses, so would like to explore this new opportunity with own cooking for approximately 30-50pax a day by only open from Fri to Sun & by advanced booking

Then more & more customers, Datin then recruiting more family members & staff, opening for breakfast till lunch or extend till tea time, 8am-5pm, it grows to 400-500pax 😲 each per day during these 3 days Fri to Sun

SiennyLovesDrawing as a go green & environmental friendly person got impressed that Istana Lemuni actually serves its customers with natural mineral water from its deep land ground, using solar as renewable energy for all its lighting as well as serving cuisine with organic ingredients from its farm & farm harvests from the local Janda Baik communities here. That’s really great 👍🏻 initiative. Do check out her happy dining TikTok clip captured 📹🌐

Asking about its future plan, Datin continues to explain that it’s still in progress that its customers will have to pick fruits on the farm, chasing chicken, duck, other farm animals, a picnic area, timbang bayar organic vegetables etc. Also there will be a gallery soon for the local artists with certain percentage from sales to contributing back to the local Janda Baik communities 👍🏻

The next time SiennyLovesDrawing is gonna try & taste the signature dish ie. Nasi Lemuni here

Address📍: https://maps.app.goo.gl/uUMYvE6Xy1UQoDsn8
Operation hours🕛: Only upon advanced booking
Website 🌐: https://www.istanalemuni.com/

Canoeing / Kayaking 🛶

There are life jackets available for children & those who can’t swim while enjoying canoeing 🛶 at this man-made lake

Cycling 🚴🏻‍♀️

It’s a nice way to explore this park & enjoy the comfy wind blows during the ride, then breath in fresh clean air

Electric Scooter 🛴🛵

Hmm…This is really fun to enjoy this ride, personally SiennyLovesDrawing was not so good in balancing herself, it was a great 1st trial she had, enjoy max!!

ATV ride

It’s a must try ATV ride here especially riding in the forest area

There are clean toilets 🚽 with toilet papers, hand soap, power-pressure shower 🚿 & trash bins provided at designated area within the park to avoid being disturb by the monkeys

Personally, SiennyLovesDrawing would like to recommend this park for family outing, school educational trip & corporate team building
