Nature Ecotourism & Heritage Things To Do at Kuching Sarawak

As shared in SiennyLovesDrawing ‘s much earlier blog story 👩🏻👩🏻‍💻✍🏻 in 2023, she was invited as media member to witness the great 👍🏻 success of recent PATA Destination Experience Forum & Mart 2023 at Kuching, Sarawak 🇲🇾

She decided to share this #throwback travel story here NOW because of a very recent sad news 🗞️ that the well known natural unique rock formation “Cobra 🐍 Head” sea stack of Bako National Park collapsed just past few days, she as a nature lover felt so sad about it

It’s completely gone now, so so sad…👩🏻😢😭

When she flown in to Kuching, Sarawak with AirAsia ❤️✈️, she really enjoyed the unique beautiful Sarawak River view 💺🪟 from her window seat, it’s impressive 😍🤩 Do check out her TikTok clip captured via 📹🌐 https://www.tiktok.com/@siennylovesdraw/video/7258452395892460802

The Sarawak River flowing through Kuching city centre. You may also enjoy slow walking 🚶🏻‍♀️ across the beautiful Darul Hana Bridge (Since Nov 2017) 🌉 to reach the other side of the river too. Ohh ya…Just cross the road from Kuching Waterfront to reach the famous Main Bazaar area where you can enjoy shopping 🛒🛍️ for souvenirs, including the Sarawak colourful layered cake ya 🍰😋💯

Ohh ya… Suggest you all to pay a must visit & collect latest info/ brochures from the Tourism Malaysia information center when you’ve touched down & reached the Kuching international airport ✈️

She has participated the destination experience tour to 1️⃣ of the best Borneo nature attractions ie. Bau’s Wind & Fairy Cave Nature Reserve for some fruit bats 🦇 & bird-spotting 🦅, as well as to explore the old gold mining town of Bau with its spectacular karst mountain backdrop & abandoned mining lakes, then enjoy a local tribal lunch 🍽️ & wander through the century-old Siniawan Old Town

Not just that, as a nature lover & ecotourism 💚💯 enthusiast, she also went to explore Bako National Park with her travel friends met from this Kuching visit, yeah 😃💯👍🏻

Do continue enjoy reading her eco & heritage exploring experiences at Kuching, Sarawak 🇲🇾💚💯👍🏻

Bako National Park

Guess what❓⁉️

It’s the oldest & smallest national park in Sarawak, gazetted in 1957. It covers an area of 27.27 square kilometres at the tip of the Muara Tebas peninsula & well known for its diverse ecosystems, coastline, jungle trekking & endangered proboscis monkeys. It’s home to rare, bizarre, obscene-nosed proboscis monkeys, found only in Borneo

You can go on your own to Bako Nationals Park 🏞️, not necessary need a nature guide / private tour arrangements. A special thanks 🙏🏻 to the great efforts 💯👍🏻 by the Sarawak Forestry Department to ensure the clear signage 🪧 , colour coding trail marking, good proper walking trails etc.

SiennyLovesDrawing & her travel friends has completed all 3️⃣ trails ie. Telok Paku, Telok Pandan Besar & Telok Pandan Kecil, yes ✅, the popular trails for a day trip

She had a good sweat & enjoyed explore the flora & fauna, the beautiful scenery along her trails journey ☺️, in particular the view overlooking the Mountain Santubong ⛰️🏞️🤩😍  & uniquely rock formations from natural erosion results over millions of years 🐍🪨 well known as “Cobra Head” sea stack

Do check out her TikTok clip captured from her trail hiking journey, boat ride 🛥️ to visit & view the recently collapsed sea stack, as well as being welcome by the Proboscis monkeys 📹🌐 via https://www.tiktok.com/@siennylovesdraw/video/7251440131670805762

You can opt for an overnight stay at the Bako National Park accommodation (Do book in advance) for a different experience ie. Go for night walk to explore the park during the night time. Suggest to hire a nature guide so with their experience & know well about the park to spot the variety of wildlife that active during night time

This absolutely gonna be a 💯 precious memorable visit that SiennyLovesDrawing still managed to view the sea stack of Bako personally before its recent collapse, sigh…

As you all can view from SiennyLovesDrawing’s IG album & blog cover photo of this story, the sea stack was already with a thin bottom from the wind & waves erosion over time during her visit in 2023, it’s not surprised it’s now gone from the recent big rough waves attack 🌊🐍🪨

Visiting hours🕗: 8am – 5pm daily

Wind Cave Nature Reserve & Fairy Cave Nature Reserve

Both are located near the town of Bau. Gold mining was the main activity in Bau in the 1840s with the Chinese being the main player in this industry. The mining of gold is still being carried out today

Let’s follow “Leave No Trace Principles” (🌐 https://lnt.org/why/7-principles/) for own safety & to protect our nature cave environment

Siennylovesdrawing 👩🏻 would like to remind all that it’s all responsibility to keep nature wild for the wildlife & to ensure it’s there for future generations. Don’t touch the cave walls or wildlife that lives there. This can damage the sensitive cave environment. Take your trash with you & don’t litter 🚯, pack it in & pack it out too ya 😁

Stay on the guided paths, do not wander off the trails & into other parts of the cave without any nature guide with you for safety reasons 💯👍🏻

✨ To know Sarawak is to love Sarawak ✨

Wind Cave aka Lubang Angin

It’s believed its name derived from the cooling breeze blowing continuously through the cave. It’s a smooth, tubular limestone cave formed during the Jurrassic-Cretaceous period ie. Roughly 60 million years ago

It’s gazetted as a nature reserve park 🏞️ by the Sarawak government to protect the numerous bio diversities here. There are around 14 different bat 🦇 species, 12 species of snails 🐌 , black nest swiftlets & various rare orchids & palms 🌴at the nature reserve

It’s made up of 3️⃣ unlit tubular passages

Before entering, all visitors must watch the required safety video at the visitor center 1️⃣st. The Sarawak Forestry Department really does a great 💯👍🏻 job with information & descriptions of how the cave was formed through informational graphics at the visitor center, bravo & keep it up 👏🏻🙌🏻

A 1️⃣K meter plank walk runs throughout the length of the cave, easy & safe to explore it, although the interior of the cave is unlit & a torchlight 🔦 is essential. A small stream meanders through the cave & joins the Sarawak River at the northern end. The main cave passages are wide & flat, while the smaller passages form an irregular network in the northern section of the cave

The Wind Cave’s main features include stalagmites, stalactites & pillars which form when these 2️⃣ join together. Other features include conical cavities separated by blade-like pinnacles of limestone, limestone pendants hanging from the roof of the cave passage & current scallops which have a honeycomb appearance & indicate the direction of the water flow

There is ❌ lighting at all at Wind Cave (To avoid disturbing the bats 🦇 ) so after walking for a min, visitors will completely reliant on torch light 🔦 which is indispensable for this cave. It’s recommended to show your torch light 🔦on your feet 👣 area & not on the wall to avoid scared the bats 🦇

SiennyLovesDrawing appreciates this opportunity as it’s a rare & unique to experience such complete enveloping darkness with only the high-pitched squeals of bats for company here, unique experience gained 🖤💯👍🏻

Yellow 💛 reflective stickers line the route & there are railings on both sides of the path so visitors cannot fall off or get lost. Notice boards 🪧 at periodic intervals provide information on the species living in the cave, including Dusky Fruit Bats 🦇

For safety reasons, all visitors must wear proper outdoor attire, shoes 👟 & prepare torchlight 🔦 in order to enter the caves. You may rent at ticket counter for cover show & headlamp with a small fee ya

Tips on What to Bring/Wear

  • Wear sturdy close-toed footwear with good grips 👟 as some of the paths are slippery, especially outside the cave
  • Wear a hat/ cap 👒🎩🧢 unless you think bat droppings are good for hair
  • Wear an effective insect repellent, or wear long sleeves & long trousers 👖 with long socks
  • Gloves 🧤 are not a bad idea as the hand rails in the cave are guano encrusted
  • Bring some drinking water. It’s really hot & humid to spend 30mins inside the cave
  • Don’t forget the headlamp/ torch 🔦 The headlamp sort is preferable. Make sure you’ve change with 🆕 batteries 🔋 ya

Fairy Cave aka Gua Pari/ Gua Kapor

It’s gazetted as a nature reserve park by the Sarawak government to protect the numerous bio diversities here. There are around 14 different bat species, 12 species of snails, black nest swiftlets & various rare orchids & palms at the nature reserve

It’s about 30mins drive from Kuching city center & 8km away from Wind Cave

Upon arrival, there is a visitor center with washroom 🚽

Before entering, you must watch the required safety video at the visitor center 1️⃣st. The Sarawak Forestry Department really does a great 💯👍🏻 job with information & descriptions of how the cave was formed through informational graphics at the visitor center, bravo & keep it up 👏🏻🙌🏻

Fairy Cave has a light filled cavernous main chamber. The limestone stalactites takes so much time to build up ie. approximately 🔟cm every thousand years, wow 😲

The cave formations were so interesting & SiennyLovesDrawing couldn’t help but stop & stare at them every few steps 👩🏻🤩😍 Absolutely stunning natural formation here, impressive beautiful ❤️

This mystical cave sits approximately 30m above the ground & it’s believed to be the home for Chinese gods & goddess. The unique cavern & rock formations at Fairy Cave is unlike any other limestone caves,it simply amazes & impressed all with how beautiful our mother nature is 😍🤩

To get to the caves, visitors will have to climb up the 5️⃣ storey high stairs. As you make your way up, you will notice various sign boards educating visitors on the flora & fauna available at this nature reserve. At the very top of it, then reach the viewpoint of the surrounding area with a beautiful backdrop of the nearby terrains

There are 3️⃣ trails ie. Twilight Trail (30mins on average & covering a distance of 343m), Dark Trail (It proceed onwards for another 15 to 20mins along the 250m unlit pathway) & Gunung Kapor Summit Trail (Most challenging & it requires a guide & permit approval in advance)

SiennyLovesDrawing has completed 👩🏻🚶🏻‍♀️💯✅ both the Twilight Trail & Dark Trail for a short day trip here with other PATA delegates

Fairy Cave is well equipped for rock climbing. There are 8️⃣ walls with various difficulty for visitors to try out & all being certified by the International Mountaineering & Climbing Federation (IMCF)

There were some common legends & stories on how Fairy Cave got its name

Tips on What to Bring/Wear

  • It’s closed during heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning occurrences & strong winds. So, do weather check 1️⃣st before visiting it
  • If you plan to drive to Fairy Cave, do ensure that car tyre & brakes are working well
  • No vandalism, littering, smoking & destructive behaviour will be tolerated
  • Wear reliable close-toed footwear when visiting the caves, as some parts of the trail are slippery when wet. You won’t be allowed to enter the cave if you’re using sandals. Note: Can rent “Adidas Kampung”, a locally made footwear often used for outdoor activities at the booth just beside the entrance
  • Mind your head as certain parts the cave have a lower ceiling & watch out for falling rock 🪨
  • Take along your gloves 🧤 if you have them as the handrails here are often coated with bat guano
  • Carry along some drinking water as the caves can get pretty hot & humid
  • To bring a headlamp/ torch light 🔦  Note: Can rent from the counter for a small fee

Siniawan Old Town

Siniawan is a small town in the Bau district, about 20km away from Kuching. The Siniawan Heritage Fiesta celebrates the cultural heritage of the small town with unique Hakka legacy in Sarawak. In fact, Siniawan also a sister town to Hukou 湖口, an old town in Taiwan’s 🇹🇼 Hakka heartland Hsinchu

SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻🍽️😋 was here during the day time for a lunch dining at Ayak Gallery Cafe. Then, slow walking🚶🏻‍♀️to enjoy the heritage street with 2️⃣ rows of old shops (24 shops on each side). Very calm & quiet during the day time

IMG_20230722_230104

During the weekends ie. 5pm – 10.30pm Friday to Sunday, Siniawan’s street comes alive with stalls selling food & snacks. Yes ✅, when the Siniawan Night Market is set up along the streets of the town, it offers a wide variety of local delicacies & street snacks. The main attraction of this night market is the abundance of Chinese lanterns 🏮🏮that change the way the street looks, turning it into a movie-like setting 🤩😍

Its design is largely Islamic, mainly of Indian & Middle-Eastern origin with some Chinese influence (The roof’s carved fascia board & dragon fin), as craftsmen from China were involved in the palace’s construction. The double-storey structure has many rooms, including a royal bath (Kolam Mandi Diraja), throne room (Balai Rong Seri), banquet room (Kamar Santap Diraja), bedrooms (Kamar Beradu), audience halls (Balai Mengadap), verandah (Sotoh), kitchen (Dapur) & a “forbidden garden” (Taman Larangan). Indigenous Village Manok, Pos Sg Rual

There are Jahai & Temai indigenous people staying here & majority are Muslims with kids & family. They spoke well in local Kelantanese Malay dialect

SiennyLovesDrawing has observed a sundry store to this village is actually a movable vehicle 🚘🚗 that supplying fish 🐟, vegetables, groceries etc. during her visit

There is a beautiful school 🏫 built in it to provide education opportunity for the indigenous kids 👍🏻

Not just that, the University Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) researchers are also working closely on the cultivation of grey oyster mushrooms 🍄 with the local indigenous community here. They’ve embraced the latest technology in mushroom cultivation & have acquired entrepreneurial skills to sell their produce at the local markets in Kelantan state

A great effort to reduce hardcore poverty between UMK & the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) so in the long run to progressively establish Kampung Sungai Rual as the East Coast hub for mushroom cultivation 🇲🇾❤️💯👍🏻

Pinehill Garden 🍇, Marang, Terengganu

It’s privately owned fruit garden with home grown passion fruit & grapes, already operated for 6️⃣ years now, the grapes 🍇 harvested only enough supply to make grape juice at its cafe. The very 1️⃣st harvesting was all sourish grapes, then subsequent years with sweet grapes harvesting

Guess what❓⁉️

Yes ✅, Malaysia can grow grapes 🇲🇾🍇💯👍🏻

Planting grapes 🍇 in hot country like Malaysia 🇲🇾 is possible, however with rigid & required proper care especially during the beginning stage of its root planting ie. The root cannot be shaked, cannot be dropped out or disturbed by a cat or dog etc. To plant with a mixture of sand, “Koko Pit & “Peroi” soil & its secret fertiliser. Most importantly, cannot let the growing grapes 🍇 having too much water especially no rain 🌧️☔ water. The fruits beared with be covered up to avoid being attack by any insects

Grape 🍇 harvest season of 5️⃣kg twice a year her. This year due to its improvise fertiliser used, it has harvested for an additional 1️⃣ time, wow 😲 Good news 👍🏻

They’re selling baby grape tree of RM120 ie. “keratan batang” & also its secret fertiliser for public to buy & plant it on their own

SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 has tried the fresh grapes 🍇 harvested here, it’s sweet when 1️⃣st chewing in mouth, however it ends with a slight sourish bitter taste from its “kelat” fruit skin

She also bought a bottle of its fresh grape natural extract juice 🍇 & enjoyed its natural grape sweetness

In conclusion, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 really enjoyed her campervan 🚐 trip for the 1️⃣st time, especially the convenience of having toilet 🚽, hot shower ♨️🚿 & good sleep 😴🛌🏻in air conditioning throughout this trip. No need to worry about sleeping in air-conditioning in RV 🚐 as it’s using room air conditioning just like home 🏡 or office, not the normal vehicle air conditioner. So, it’s 💯% safe

It was an amazing ✨ ~ Jelajah Campervan Pantai Timur 2023 ~ ✨

Sharing some of her tips from recent campervan travel experience 👩🏻🚐,

  • Wherever possible, use the public shower 🚿 & toilet 🚽 facilities, save the washroom in the campervan 🚐 for emergency usage to avoid unpleasant hygiene & urine smells as well as limited water tank
  • If travel long journey, must 1️⃣st pump diesel ⛽ to full tank before departure
  • If cooking, suggest to cook outside of the campervan 🚐 to avoid oily & smelly campervan
  • For overnight, ensure survey 1️⃣st & call up the campsite 🏕️ to confirm the availability with campervan parking 🚐🅿️ & plug 🔌 point for charging before your campervan travel
  • When parking 🅿️ on the beach 🏖️, need to be careful as heavy vehicle 🚐 may sink in the soft sand area
  • When charging your RV 🚐, do ensure it’s properly charged & not overload the usage of a same charging plug 🔌 point to avoid a total blackout of your RV from its flat battery ya
  • Remember to lock 🔒 your RV whenever you’re away & no one in it
  • Always remember that most RVs with higher height, so must use the heavy vehicle or lorry lane to crossing certain areas, especially the toll plazas that generally with height barrier during your road journey 🛣️

Spain New Halal Tourism Travel Guide ~ Andalusia Welcoming Muslim Travellers

As a Muslims friendly blogger & content creator, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 is excited to shared with you all that Spain 🇪🇸 has recently launched a 🆕& 1️⃣-stop electronic travel guide 📲 for Muslim Travellers in planning to explore its southern region, Andalusia by making it easier to find reference on what to see, what to visit, where to stay & recommendations of Muslim-friendly restaurants 🍽️☪️✅

This initiative forms part of Spain’s goal to reinforce awareness of its efforts to expand services that attend to the needs of Muslim travellers in the country & other foreign tourists

“We are very excited about this Guide.” said Spain’s Tourism Counsellor in Singapore 🇸🇬 , Ms Monica Sanchez 👩🏻‍💼

“We believe it’s a promotional tool that we have been missing, especially given Andalusia’s rich Islamic history & heritage

Andalusia is a popular destination 📍 for Muslim travellers, but its halal offer is still largely unknown in South East Asia 🌏”
