Kubang Jela House Stay @ Terrapuri Heritage Village, Terengganu, Malaysia

Yeah‌ From the recent travel 🚌🚍 to Terengganu đŸ‡ČđŸ‡Ÿ, SiennyLovesDrawing đŸ‘©đŸ» had an exclusive privilege to meet đŸ‘‹đŸ» & have a short chat đŸ—ŁđŸ‘€ with the founder of Terrapuri Heritage Village, Mr Alex Lee đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œ He is a Chinese Peranakan, born & grown up in Marang, Terengganu đŸ‡ČđŸ‡Ÿ

She đŸ‘©đŸ» is gonna sharing đŸ‘©đŸ»â€đŸ’»đŸ“âœđŸ» here about all she đŸ‘©đŸ» has learnt from her chat đŸ—ŁđŸ‘€ with Mr Alex đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œabout the ups âŹ†ïž & downs âŹ‡ïž in pursuing his passion ❀ towards the conservation & restoration of Terengganu traditional Malay architecture 🏡🏘 He đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œ has proudly told that he loves 💗 each old houses 🏡🏘 that he has collected thus far & each 1ïžâƒŁ is unique to him with a story behind respectively 😀

Question❓: Can you spot SiennyLovesDrawing đŸ‘©đŸ» in below photos 📾📾 album? She đŸ‘©đŸ» was having a nice đŸ‘đŸ» pre-dinner chat đŸ—ŁđŸ‘€with Mr Alex @ Sesayap Courtyard, Terrapuri Heritage Village during her recent stay

Ha…Ha…She đŸ‘©đŸ» actually thought that Mr Alex đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œwas an architect by profession. Mr Alex has confirmed that he is a tourism industry player with own tourism businesses in guest house 🏡 , boutique hotel, dining đŸœđŸŽ, cafe ☕, tours, souvenirs (batik) 🛍🎁 etc.

Guess what❓⁉

Mr Alex đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œ1ïžâƒŁst started to learn about guest house 🏡 renting (i.e. used his grandpa đŸ‘ŽđŸ» ‘s 2ïžâƒŁ shoplots 🏱🏱) at his young age đŸ§‘đŸ» with initial intention to save for his education fund đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸŽ“He used to drawing âœđŸ»đŸŽšđŸ–Œown brochure to selling the rooms at bus stations 🚌🚌 & received great responses from many backpackers đŸ‘«đŸ‘đŸ‘Źback then. He đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œalso learnt how to package his room with simple breakfast ☕đŸ„Ș, yes ✅, he can cookâ€ŒïžđŸ‘đŸ»

Ended up he đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œ continues his tourism business till now without further study âŒđŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸŽ“despite in years between 2006 to 2008 with a cross road 🔀 for his choice, whether IT vs heritage, nature & culture. Obviously he đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œhas chosen the later. Ha…Ha…He has shared in his IG (refer above 📾) recently that he wants to be a Youtuber (IT) now (2019) being inspired by his youngest son 👹‍👩, a famous gaming Youtuber

Also she đŸ‘©đŸ» is gonna sharing đŸ‘©đŸ»â€đŸ’»đŸ“ about her wonderful overnight đŸ˜ŽđŸ’€đŸ›Œ in Kubang Jela house 🏡 in this village. Hmm…A night 🌌🌃 stay just too short, personally she đŸ‘©đŸ» recommends for a 3ïžâƒŁD2ïžâƒŁN to appreciating the layout of an inspired 17th century Terengganu Palace 👑 as an great đŸ‘đŸ» output of restoration the Terengganu Malay old houses 🏡🏘 of at least 💯 years & above, as well as its peaceful village surrounding 🏞

💯 years meaning easily at least with 4ïžâƒŁ generations before Mr AlexđŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œbought the old houses 🏡🏘 Some of the houses 🏡🏘 were once belong to the royal families 👑👑 Woow‌đŸ˜Č He đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œhas shared that 30 years ago, a full Terengganu old house 🏠 each cost of RM30K to 40K approximately 😊

How about now❓⁉

He đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œ estimates RM300K & above each old house 🏠 at current. He đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œ has no ❌ intention to resell any of his Terengganu Malay old houses 🏡🏘 collected, though he đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œ was being offered with great đŸ‘đŸ» prices đŸ’±đŸ’°couple of times in the past 😃

.

Hmm…Does Mr Alex đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œregret❓⁉

Personally SiennyLovesDrawing đŸ‘©đŸ»can confidently said “No ❌” from her observation, Mr Alex’s achievements from Terrapuri Heritage Village & chat with himđŸ—ŁđŸ‘€ about his journey

Why❓⁉

You will be impressed as Mr Alex đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œis very knowledgeable & passionate ❀ in what he is doing for Terengganu old houses restoration & conservation 🏡🏘

.

Over the years, he đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œhopes to continue & enhancing his project as a tourism products, currently he đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œis running this Terrapuri Heritage Village as a boutique hotel resort space 🏡🏘 Owned a museum cafe dining đŸœđŸŽ (with advanced booking đŸ“žâ˜ŽïžđŸ“±for event etc.) & an upcoming Terramalai, a collection of traditional Malay houses 🏡🏘 from all over the states in Malaysia đŸ‡ČđŸ‡Ÿ & will be based in Batu Rakit, Kuala Nerus district of Terengganu 😁

After bought each houses 🏡🏘, all will be dismantled & then rebuilt. All Terengganu old houses 🏡🏘 were built without ❌ a single nail 🔹, it’s using the traditional “tebuk pasak” aka peg & joint technique with the help from the professional skillful Malay carpenters aka “tukang rumah” in Malaysia đŸ‡ČđŸ‡Ÿ ‘s national language 😀

He đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œemphasised few times in his sharing “We have to always go back to our own root. Culture is so beautiful & unique not to be shared to next generations đŸ‘¶đŸ»đŸ‘§đŸ»đŸ§’đŸ»đŸ‘ŠđŸ»đŸ§‘đŸ»

He đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œhas shared that he was struggled 😱â˜čïžđŸ˜”to communicate, convince the house owners 👬👬👬 to sell đŸ’±đŸ’°their houses 🏡🏘 to him when he 1ïžâƒŁst started his heritage collection. Reason being he is a Chinese Peranakan, not a Muslim ❌â˜Ș He also proudly shared that he speaks fluent Terengganu Malay & this has helped a lot 😊

Once he đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œhas indentified ✅ the old house 🏠 that he is interested, he will slowly get to know the local house owner 1ïžâƒŁst. He is very persevere in his collection passion, he patiently kept visiting, communicating đŸ—ŁđŸ‘€ Then, after knowing him better & appreciate his passion ❀towards the Terengganu Malay old houses 🏡🏘, the house owner will sell their old house to him đŸ’±đŸ’° eventually

Guess what❓⁉

There was an old house 🏠 that actually took him 15 years ✅🏡 after many many communications with the owner đŸ—ŁđŸ‘€ Wow‌đŸ˜Č It’s named as Rumah Pulau Bahagia in Terrapuri Heritage Village & yet to be ready as guest villa currently â˜ș

Mr Alex đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œhas actually collected the old houses 🏡🏘 for 18 years (all being dismantled & stored at the backyard of his parents đŸ‘”đŸ»đŸ‘ŽđŸ»house, on top of stones & covered with zinc to protect the chengal wood) before he bought this 4 ha land in 2005 which surrounding with islands 🏝🌮 & Setiu mangroves wetlands (Safe from tsunami 🌊 & chance to view fireflies đŸ’«âœšat night) in Kg. Mangkuk

He đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œwas discouraged đŸ‘ŽđŸ»by family members & friends đŸ‘«đŸ‘đŸ‘Ź at the beginning that he shoud invest in other investment & not ❌ in restoration project. Also not in Terengganu as the location 📍that he has chosen ✅😃

Restoration requires for a long time frame & huge sum of money đŸ’°đŸ’” to maintain. He actually đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œsold off his luxury cars 🚗🚙 & properties before just to continue this restoration project. No any ❌ bank loan/ Government grant has obtained becasue this is a non profit/ business investment 🏡🏘

His passion ❀ in Terengganu old houses 🏡🏘restoration that motivates him to continue his journey till now, future & never end 😁

Question❓: Do you spot a smiling 😃 craving in below photođŸ“žâ“â‰ïž

Terengganu Traditional Malay Old Houses 🏡🏘

From her chat đŸ—ŁđŸ‘€ with Mr Alex, she đŸ‘©đŸ» has learnt that the balance ⚖ is important in Malay belief, hence the height & wide of each house 🏡 is required to have good đŸ‘đŸ» ukiran rumah aka house 🏠 measurement as it also meant for good đŸ‘đŸ» feng sui. To Mr Alex đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œ, life is a balance too, not just about making money đŸ’°đŸ’”

The houses 🏡🏘 built with high legs to protect from flood & with aims to scard away the animals 🐘🩏🐅

The stairs (i.e. “tangga” in Malaysia đŸ‡ČđŸ‡Ÿ ‘s national language) to each Malay house 🏠 must with an odd numbers eg. 3ïžâƒŁ, 5ïžâƒŁ, 7ïžâƒŁ etc.

.

She đŸ‘©đŸ» has learnt that there is meaning for Terengganu house 🏠 gate. She was told if you have bad intention (e.g. to rob the house owner) when you step 👣 into the house 🏠 , you may end up unable to see the house gate to exit thenđŸšȘ

Generally, the Terengganu Malay old houses 🏡🏘 are with beautiful 😍😍 wall craving, Islamic â˜Ș influences, more to flora designs, some stupa are more towards Buddhism ⛩ No ❌ devil craving motives

There are 29 houses 🏡🏘 in this Terrapuri Heritage Village since 2012 i.e. 20 houses 🏡🏘 have been restored as guest villas & the remaining 9 houses serve as the resort reception, courtyard, spa, meeting room, library etc. â˜ș

Actually he đŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸ’Œ has bought đŸ’°đŸ’”đŸ’Ż over houses 🏡🏘, only 29 units in this village while the rest serves as spare parts as most houses 🏡🏘 bought are only 70% able to be used due to extensively damaged & had rotting wood

Mural 🎹🖌 streets @ Jalan Alor

Ohhh wowđŸ˜Č‌ If you love 💗 wall murals 🎹🖌, you will be amazed with the greatly designed đŸ˜đŸ€© wall murals 🎹🖌 along the Jalan Alor, an initiative driven by Malaysia đŸ‡ČđŸ‡Ÿ ‘s Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) 😊

The main side lane have been painted to look like a meandering stream 🏞 & a waterfall 💩💧with a replica of the Spanish Steps 👣 for its 3ïžâƒŁD effects. You will feel like you are walking đŸš¶đŸ»â€â™€ïžđŸš¶đŸ»â€â™‚ïž over a stream actually 🏞

Personally, SiennyLovesDrawing đŸ‘©đŸ» loves ❀ how the wall murals z🎹🖌 transform the ordinary apartment residential 🏱 areas with a vibrant look đŸ˜đŸ€© Impressive beautiful 😍 & it has been 1ïžâƒŁ of the famous tourist destinations📍📍in KL now for both local & foreign tourists to appreciate Malaysian đŸ‡ČđŸ‡Ÿ art talents đŸ‘©đŸ»â€đŸŽšđŸ‘šđŸ»â€đŸŽš Bravoâ€ŒïžđŸ‘đŸ»đŸ™ŒđŸ»

Escape Room

SiennyLovesDrawing đŸ‘©đŸ»’s 1ïžâƒŁst time to try out this MalaysiađŸ‡ČđŸ‡Ÿ’s premier real escape game, she was a bit nervous whether possible to escape herself & her team mates allocated for it đŸ‘«đŸ‘đŸ‘Ź

It was a vampires đŸ§›â€â™€ïžđŸ§›â€â™‚ïž theme game, quite scarry 😧 too initially when the centre officer đŸ™‹đŸ»â€â™‚ïž open the room doorđŸšȘ

This game with 4ïžâƒŁ doors đŸšȘđŸšȘđŸšȘđŸšȘ to open with clues to solve for each đŸ€—

Guess what❓⁉

She đŸ‘©đŸ» was in totally darkness âŹ›ïž with her team mates đŸ‘đŸ‘ŹđŸ‘« for the briefing đŸ—ŁđŸ‘„đŸ‘€đŸ‘„, then a torch 🔩 light was given for the game. WoowđŸ˜Č‌ Quite a unique experience, do enjoy yours with a group of friends or family members ya đŸ‘đŸ‘«đŸ‘Ź

Yeah‌ She đŸ‘©đŸ» has enjoyed the team work đŸ€đŸ’ȘđŸ» & everyone so involved to get out together đŸ‘đŸ‘ŹđŸ‘«

Hmm…Limited photos 📾 she had for this game to share here due to the tight game duration of 45mins to solve the game clues, moreover in the dark âŹ›ïž most of the time during this exciting escape game đŸ‘đŸ»đŸ˜ƒđŸ˜

It’s adopting a mixture of Eastern & Western designs, also presenting a mixture of Western & Mughal which similarly to Moorish Revival/ Indo-Saracenic architectuređŸ›€đŸ«

The 8 Wonders of Johor!

Still remember 💭 Johor state, Malaysia đŸ‡ČđŸ‡Ÿ is the 1ïžâƒŁst state that SiennyLovesDrawing đŸ‘©đŸ» received an exclusive 1st media invitation from Tourism Johor in the beginning of her lifestyle blogging đŸ‘©đŸ»â€đŸ’»đŸ“journey, then subsequently a few more. A special thank you đŸ™đŸ»& great appreciation for the trustđŸ€

Hmm…Where are the 8ïžâƒŁ wonders recently visited by SiennyLovesDrawing đŸ‘©đŸ» at Johor ~ the Southern gateway into Malaysia đŸ‡ČđŸ‡Ÿ ❓⁉

(i) Zeromile aka Kilometre Zero0ïžâƒŁ

What’s it meant for❓⁉

It’s also written as KM0ïžâƒŁ i.e. a particular location📍usually a country’s capital city 🌆🏙 from which the distances are traditionally measured🔱 Historically, they were markers📍where drivers 🚗🚕🚙🚌🚚🚐 could set their odometers to follow the directions in the early days😄

For West Malaysia đŸ‡ČđŸ‡Ÿ, this monument 0ïžâƒŁ is located right in front of the Johor Bahru General Post Office 📼 at Jalan Ibrahim Sultan. It’s 1ïžâƒŁ of the rare cases where the zeromile 0ïžâƒŁ is not located at the country’s capital cityđŸ€—

Photo 23-04-2018, 6 17 23 PM.jpg

SiennyLovesDrawing đŸ‘©đŸ» is really impressed đŸ˜đŸ€© & truly appreciate the different architectural designs of this building 🏱 from her recent 1ïžâƒŁst visit. The architecture of this building is uniquely Johor-Malay & yet infused with a strong Moorish-Andalusian elements to create a unique style đŸ‘đŸ»đŸ‘đŸ» This symbolises the balance of authority & a family friendly at Johor state of Malaysia đŸ‡ČđŸ‡Ÿ

  • The jewel / diamond 💎 (Jauhar in Arabic) ~ where name of Johor has derived
  • The pineapple 🍍 & black pepper ~ Johor’s economic prosperity
  • The pineapple 🍍 skylight ~ openness & transparency
  • Newell knobs with stylised black pepper vines ~ Johor’s past economic prosperity
  • Traditional Malay carving & abstract designs
