Beats of Selangor 😃 ~ Malay

During her recent glamping 🏕 stay @ Dusun Bonda, Batang Kali of Selangor state, West Malaysia 🇲🇾 , she 👩🏻 has a chance to learn more details about the Malay traditional music & beats as below,

Malaysian Caklempong

It’s a traditional music 🎵🎶 of the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra, Indonesia 🇮🇩 however was brought to Negeri Sembilan, West Malaysia 🇲🇾 in the 14th century by the Minangkabau people

.

A small-size gong made of bronze that produces melodious sounds & often used to play a wide variety of both traditional & modern music 🎵 🎶 Other instruments e.g. bamboo flute, “Saluang, Malay tambourine & gong are played together with Caklempong for various dance/ performance e.g. Pencak Silat, Candle Dance, Wayang Kulit etc.

Keroncong band performance

It’s actually the name of a ukulele-like instrument & an Indonesian musical style which typically makes use of the keroncong (i.e. The sound chrong-chrong-chrong comes from this instrument). So, the band consists of a flute, a violin 🎻 , a melody guitar 🎸 , a cello, string bass in pizzicato style & with either a female / a male singer 👩🏽‍🎤👨🏽‍🎤

.

She 👩🏻 has learnt that 1️⃣ ukulele named “cak”, a steel-stringed. The instrumentalist strums chords with up to 8️⃣ strums per beat in 4/4 rhythm. The off-beat strums are often accentuated. The other ukulele named “cuk” is slightly larger & has nylon strings. As a set, both the “cak” & “cuk” form an interlocking pair that mostly gives Kroncong its characteristic kron & chong 😊

.

Tor Tor Dance & Gordang Sembilan

Tor Tor dance & 9️⃣ great drumbeats/ percussion (Gordang Sembilan in Malaysia 🇲🇾 ‘s national language) are the cultural heritage of Malaysia 🇲🇾 ‘s Mandailing community, which originally came from Mandailing, North Sumatera of Indonesia 🇮🇩

.

It’s a slow motion dance with the movement of the feet / toe to toe 👣 & hand 🤚🏻 movements with a music 🎵🎶 rhythm played with the traditional music instruments e.g. Gondang, Flute, Trumpet 🎺 etc. At present, Tor tor dance is to celebrating harvesting, welcoming guests, wedding 🤵🏾👰🏽 ceremonies. No ❌ longer associated with the religious / mystical ceremonies in the past years

Kuda Kepang

It was 1️⃣st introduced in the early 20th century when Javanese immigrants 🇮🇩👭👬👫, who brought this unique dance & 1️⃣st arrived in the southern tip of West Malaysia 🇲🇾 It’s usually performed by 9 to 15 pax, usually all men dancers traditional Javanese clothes

In the past years, Kuda Kepang is believed to have a strong linkage to the spirit world, however at present it becomes a regular dance performance for the birthday 🎂 of the Sultan of Johor, state government celebrations & cultural shows in Malaysia 🇲🇾

.

It’s a traditional Javanese braided hobbyhorse dance & in the dance performance, all the dancers will ride the 2️⃣D mock horse which is traditionally made of bamboo 🎍🎋, then painted & decorated with colorful paints and cloth to resemble a horse 🐎 🐴 Some of the dance movements in the Kuda Kepang rituals are based on traditional Malay silat

.
