Keroncong band performance

It’s actually the name of a ukulele-like instrument & an Indonesian musical style which typically makes use of the keroncong (i.e. The sound chrong-chrong-chrong comes from this instrument). So, the band consists of a flute, a violin 🎻 , a melody guitar 🎸 , a cello, string bass in pizzicato style & with either a female / a male singer 👩🏽‍🎤👨🏽‍🎤

She 👩🏻 has learnt that 1️⃣ ukulele named “cak”, a steel-stringed. The instrumentalist strums chords with up to 8️⃣ strums per beat in 4/4 rhythm. The off-beat strums are often accentuated. The other ukulele named “cuk” is slightly larger & has nylon strings. As a set, both the “cak” & “cuk” form an interlocking pair that mostly gives Kroncong its characteristic kron & chong 😊

Tor Tor Dance & Gordang Sembilan

Tor Tor dance & 9️⃣ great drumbeats/ percussion (Gordang Sembilan in Malaysia 🇲🇾 ‘s national language) are the cultural heritage of Malaysia 🇲🇾 ‘s Mandailing community, which originally came from Mandailing, North Sumatera of Indonesia 🇮🇩

It’s a slow motion dance with the movement of the feet / toe to toe 👣 & hand 🤚🏻 movements with a music 🎵🎶 rhythm played with the traditional music instruments e.g. Gondang, Flute, Trumpet 🎺 etc. At present, Tor tor dance is to celebrating harvesting, welcoming guests, wedding 🤵🏾👰🏽 ceremonies. No ❌ longer associated with the religious / mystical ceremonies in the past years

Kuda Kepang

It was 1️⃣st introduced in the early 20th century when Javanese immigrants 🇮🇩👭👬👫, who brought this unique dance & 1️⃣st arrived in the southern tip of  West Malaysia 🇲🇾 It’s usually performed by 9 to 15 pax, usually all men dancers traditional Javanese clothes

In the past years, Kuda Kepang is believed to have a strong linkage to the spirit world, however at present it becomes a regular dance performance for the birthday 🎂 of the Sultan of Johor, state government celebrations & cultural shows in Malaysia 🇲🇾

It’s a traditional Javanese braided hobbyhorse dance & in the dance performance, all the dancers will ride the 2️⃣D mock horse which is traditionally made of bamboo 🎍🎋, then painted & decorated with colorful paints and cloth to resemble a horse 🐎 🐴 Some of the dance movements in the Kuda Kepang rituals are based on traditional Malay silat

Rentak Selangor 2018 (Part 1)

Yeah‼️ ✌🏻SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 has recently being invited 📩📧💌 by Tourism Selangor & participated as 1️⃣ of the international media team 👫👭👬 (from Malaysia 🇲🇾, Indonesia 🇮🇩, Japan 🇯🇵 & Korea 🇰🇷) for the Rentak Selangor 2018 in Malaysia🇲🇾’s national language with meaning of the Beats of Selangor 😃

It’s the strategic effort for the 3️⃣rd year to further promote ⬆️ the State of Selangor as a tourism & cultural destination in Malaysia 🇲🇾

IMG-20180328-WA0001.jpg

Personally, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 has learnt & discovered so much during this 5️⃣D4️⃣N trip 🚌 about the diverse co-existence of cultural traditions & ecosystems in Selangor state of Malaysia 🇲🇾

Hmm…Why Selangor❓⁉️

It’s because throughout the years, Selangor is 1️⃣ of the multiracial 👬👫👭 states in Malaysia 🇲🇾 that arose with beautiful 😍🤩 blends of various vibrant cultural heritage influences in traditional dances 👹👺💃🏻🕺& music 🎶🎧🎵🎼🎤A deep rooted musical heritage actually defines a race group’s identity & solidarity😁

What’s the objectives❓⁉️

  • To promote ⬆️ Selangor as a tourism destination of choice while travelling to Malaysia 🇲🇾
  • To introduce the culture of Selangor to a widen public 👭👬👫
  • To celebrate & propagate the musical 🎶🎧🎵🎼🎤& traditional dances 👹👺💃🏻🕺 heritage of Selangor
  • To strengthen 🤝🙌🏻 the collaborative relationship between Selangor Exco for Youth Generation Development (UPEN) with the participating stakeholders, international media practitioners, travel agencies & tourism industry players👭👬👫

So, what are the beats & moves (i.e. musics 🎶🎼🎵& dances💃🏻🕴🏻)❓⁉️

Cempuling ~ Selangor Javaneses’ Joy

It means a collection of music 🎶🎼🎵 instruments that uses beats for different rhythm & sound brought to Selangor state of Malaysia 🇲🇾 by Sunan Kalijaga. The music 🎶🎼🎵played are in the form of advices for the audiences 👭👫👬

  • Cem ~ A variety as the musicians 👭👬👫 with different background & different types & sizes of instruments🎹🎸🥁
  • Pul ~ All sorts of people gathering👭👫👬
  • Iling ~ It’s the Java language to reminding each other about self, team member & communities. In religious term, it means self reflections & self reminders😀

She has enjoyed the modern Cempuling performance by Cempuling moden Cendana Klasik 👭👫👬👍🏻

Hmm…Modern Cempuling❓⁉️

Because it’s including with modern music 🎶🎼🎵 instruments e.g. keyboard 🎹 , guitar 🎸 etc. as refer to the 2️⃣nd row of above boomerang 📹🎥 captured

The music 🎶🎼🎵 instruments for Cempuling includes Rebana Ibu, Rebana Gong, Rebana Kempul, Rebana Kempreng, Rebana Anak, Enteng-Enteng 1️⃣, Enteng-Enteng 2️⃣ etc.😊

Guess what❓⁉️

The songs 🎶🎼🎤 played with Cempuling are with a variety from songs from Java, Malay, Mandarin, Tamil etc. She enjoyed the performance of a Mandarin song by late famous Taiwanese 🇹🇼 singer, Teresa Teng💁🏻‍♀️

Do enjoy a video clip 📹🎥 captured by SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 for sharing here,

Urumee Melum உறுமிமேளம் Drummers ~ Calling of the Gods’ Spirit 🥁🥁

This is the most vibrant 🤩 & essential of the Malaysian-Indian traditions found in Malaysia 🇲🇾 with its double-headed hourglass-shaped drum originated from the state of Tamil Nadu, South of India 🇮🇳

This music 🎶🎼🎵has been widely believed to possess deep sacred power & it mostly associated with the trance rituals of calling of the gods’ spirit. It’s slung with a cloth strap across the shoulder & played by the drummer 👬👬👬🥁horizontally. It’s played entirely with sticks & simply allows the drummer to either play it by standing 👬 or walking 🚶🏻‍♂️🚶🏻‍♂️ around

Do enjoy a short clip 📹🎥 captured by SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 at Batu Caves 🏞 with the awesome 👏🏻 performance by the drummers 👬👬👬 🥁from the Chinna Rasa Urumee Melum Masana Kali

Some of the music 🎶🎼🎵🥁 instruments including Urumee, Thavil, Pambai, Jaldra etc.

She was informed that all the drummers of this music group are very self discipline i.e. only perform the music with full proper praying attire 👕👖as their performance attire, bare foot 👣 & with no ❌🍻drinking & smoking❌🚬habits to respect this holy tradition heritage. They are all with normal diet (not necessary vegetarian) except some major prayers/ festivals 🎉🎊which require fasting before their performance at ceremonies/ temples⛩

It’s Alaeddin Palace 👑 or Bandar Jugra Palace aka Istana Bandar Lama Jugra in Malaysia 🇲🇾’s national language which was constructed using high quality timber named Cengal & marble. Its design is largely with Islamic & some influences from Indian, Middle-Eastern & Chinese (i.e. the roof’s carved fascia board & dragon 🐉 fin)

This double-storey palace 👑 has many rooms i.e. A royal 👑 bath 🛀🏻 , a throne room, a banquet room, bedrooms💤🛌, royal 👑 audiences hall, kitchen, a forbidden garden etc. It was designated as a historical monument & site under the Antiquities Act 1976 in 1980👏🏻🙌🏻
