Kampung Bukit Cherakah 🏡🏘🏡
Barongan Kuda Kepang performance
Kuda Kepang aka Flat Horse 🐴 is a traditional Javanese dance with a group of horsemen (as dancers) straddle a flat horse 🐴 Each Flat Horse was made with the braided strips of woven bamboo, then being painted & decorated colourfully
This dance portrays troops riding horses & incorporates trances. When dancers are in trance, they display extraordinary abilities as being possessed by animal spirits eg. monkey, snake, elephant, bird etc. Some of the horsemen will swallow glasses, climb trees, walk on hot burning charcoals etc.
Traditionally, this dance supposed to be with all male dancers. However, she has noted that there are some female dancers from the Persatuan Kuda Kepang Kampung Bukit Cherakah that night
Some of her travelmates have joined the dancers to enjoy the dance together, 1 of her travelmate was being chased by the Barongan, lol…Ha…Ha…
This round she 👩🏻 is gonna sharing 👩🏻💻📝 her 11thEat Travel Write (ETW 11) journey here, in particular the Kuala Kubu Bharu 新古毛 (KKB) Heritage Trail that she really enjoyed & learnt more 👍🏻💗
Let’s Explore the Jejak Warisan Heritage Trail 🚶🏻♀️🚶🏻♂️
KKB Heritage Trail
What❓⁉️
Do you know KKB with its nickname as “Kiri Kanan Bukit” (also KKB) in Malaysia 🇲🇾’s national language which means “Left Right Hill ⛰” ~ In a way, a sleepy town surrounding with hills ⛰⛰
1️⃣ of the hill ~ Bukit Batu Pahat⛰ is now famous for extreme sport ~ paragliding, aka KKB Paragliging Park currently. Not to miss the beautiful 😍🤩 scenery & view from this hill top ya 🏞
Why❓⁉️
KKB was designed by Malaya’s 1️⃣st town planner Charles Reade based on the influential ‘garden city movement’ of urban planning which 1️⃣st initiated by Sir Ebenezer Howard back in 1898
Malaysia 🇲🇾 currently has 4️⃣ UNESCO sites, hope KKB can be added ➕ soon too
You can find 4 UNESCO Heritage Sites in #Malaysia– Gunung Mulu National Park, Kinabalu Park, the historic cities of Melaka and George Town, and the Lenggong Valley heritage site.
Currently, there are 6️⃣ heritage spots 📍📍 from this Jejak Warisan Heritage Trail & more will be added ➕ soon to this trail eg. an old cinema (1953), St. Paul church, wall murals 🎨🖌 lane etc.
1️⃣. Hulu Selangor District/ Land Office Building 🏢
KKB remains as the main administrative town of Hulu Selangor district. Yes ✅, 1️⃣ of its heritage still operating as the current Hulu Selangor District Land Office 🏢
This administrative complex 🏢 rehoused the District House & the Magistrate Court. The British took a lesson from the floods tragedy by building administrative complex 🏢 on top of hill ⛰ for safety purposes. The construction of the complex 🏢 was completed in 3 Nov 1930 with a cost of $172, 675.70
It’s located at the top of Bukit Kerajaan ⛰ & was 1️⃣st built in the 1914 as a church ⛪ named The Church of Ascension to serve the Angelic devotees. It has the physical aspects of a typical Victorian building eg. the cupola at the top of roof
It had been adaptive reused when C.C Reade (1880 – 1933) proposal of the new 🆕 township that involving this hilly site ⛰ as an administration centre in year 1926 🏢
Hmm…SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 has actually missed 🤦🏻♀️ this spot from her trail exploring. A special thanks to her travelmate, IG @livelifelah 🙋🏻♀️ she has got the pictures 📸📸 of Spot 3️⃣ to share here
It was built around the 1930s along with the development of KKB. It was designed with the Neo-Classical Architecture style, mainly characterised by round gable windows & round tribe casement windows
Shophouse No.1️⃣ (PWD 211) & No. 2️⃣ (PWD 212) are shophouses in the historic building category. These shophouses were dispossessed by security forces during Malayan Emergency. However, there are 2️⃣ versions of the story,
Version 1️⃣ ~ This building is used by Communists to attack the Police 🚨👮🏻♀️👮🏻♂️Station @ Bukit Kerajaan
Version 2️⃣ ~ This building has been used by the Communists forces for their meetings
In the past, this Dato Tabal street was called as Bowen street. Bowen actually meant for a long serving District Officer of Hulu Selangor in the past as mentioned in a letter written by the District Officer of Hulu Selangor to its residents about the naming of streets in KKB. All being recorded in the book 📖 named “Tarikh Kuala Kubu 1780 – 1931” published by the Kuala Kubu History Society. Credited & do read more via 🌐 https://museumvolunteersjmm.com/2019/10/20/visit-to-kuala-kubu-bharu-kkb/
This street now being modernised with wall murals 🎨🖌, especially the entrance of a hair salon 💇🏻♂️💇🏻♀️
It was built in 1931 at a cost of $9,937.71. It was designed with the Neo-Classical Architecture style, this fire station 🚒 has 3️⃣ fire engines bay, resting room, a kitchen & a store
It’s registered as PWD No. 112 under the historic building category
This 70++ years old fire station 🚒 may look stable on the outside, however no ❌ longer safe to serve its original purpose after the repair maintenance from the massive flood in 1926
Hmm…All these 6️⃣ spots 📍📍are available ✅ for photos/ videos 📸📹🎥 opportunities anytime
Would like to recommend you all to have a guided tour to enjoy this heritage trail with a detailed heritage & history explanation of each spots 😁 by the experienced tour guides

It’s maintained & managed well 👍🏻 by Majlis Daerah Hulu Selangor (MDHS) aka Hulu Selangor District Council
Do book a guided tour at the KKB’s Tourist Info Centre ℹ️ (At the Spot 6️⃣ of this trail) to enjoy this whole trail 👍🏻
Not just the heritage trail, worth to explore below too
Al-Hidayah Old Mosque 🕌 , Ampang Pecah
1️⃣ of the oldest mosque 🕌 in Malaysia 🇲🇾
Guess what❓⁉️
When the Sungai Selangor dam was malfunctional for the 1️⃣st time in 1883, then caused a massive huge flood to KKB. The it was broken in 1926 for 2️⃣nd time, it wiped out the whole KKB town except ❌ for this mosque 🕌 & the Guan Yin Gu Si Temple ⛩ Wow‼️😲
This place was named as “broken dam” aka Ampang Pecah in the Malaysia 🇲🇾 ‘s national language due to the massive flood which broke the dams in the history
It was once said by the residents 👫👭👬 that it’s constructed by magic supretitious power in 1924 & inspired by Javanese architecture with its arabesque decorations
Wall Mural 🎨🖌 Streets
The beautiful wall murals 🎨🖌 here actually potray the history & memories of KKB, its economic activities in the past ie. tin mining ⛏ , rubber tapping as well as the white crocodile ⚪️🐊 (As a river guardian) fairy tale

Comfy Homestay/ Hotel Stay 🏨

Selangor state of Malaysia 🇲🇾 is with lots of Javenese migrants 🇮🇩👫👭👬 since early 1900s, hence lots of Javanese cultures are being influenced to the local Malaysians 🇲🇾👭👬👫
Approximately 4K villagers 👭👬👫 in Kampung Parit 2 & consists of Javanese (@ paddy field), Banjarese (@ coastal area) & Malays (In between paddy field & coastal area). The other villages are Kampung Sg Nipah, Kampung Sg Limau & Kampung Parit 4
Traditional Food Cooking Demo ~ Sambal Taun/ Tahun 🌶
This sambal is originated as🇮🇩 Javanese’s spicy 🥵🌶 sauce with the amount of chillies 🌶🌶 used & generally cooked with anchovies, clams, cow skin or cow inner parts etc.
It aims to keep for consumption of almost a year (ie. Tahun means year in Malaysia 🇲🇾‘s national language)
Keep in cooking wok & heat up daily for consumption as chilies 🌶🌶 are natural food perservative. Not to mix with coconut milk when 1st cooking it for keep purposes
She has enjoyed this dish with cow skin (Its texture like a jelly), a delicious tasty 🤤😋dinner 🍽 she had
It’s really really spicy 🌶🌶 , however she 👩🏻 loves & enjoyed it very much. She loves anchovies 😋🤤 This sambal can be cooked with chicken, beef etc. according to preference ya
There are 3️⃣ types of 🇮🇩 Javanese cakes (aka kuih in Malaysia 🇲🇾 ‘s national language) which made with its main ingredient ~ Cassava, read more via 🌐 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassava
These cakes no longer available at stalls/ shops within Selangor state, she 👩🏻 really felt privilege 😃 to still have a chance to taste them during her visit 🏡🏘🏡
Let’s enjoy her TikTok clip 📹🎥 above which being captured from all 3️⃣ cakes making demo shown. Hmm…Why not a cafe themed with all these Javanese cakes in this village❓⁉️
Ubi Kayu Getok ~ Cassava aka Ubi Kayu in Malaysia 🇲🇾 ‘s national language
Flat Bread Making 🍥 (aka Roti Canai in Malaysia 🇲🇾 ‘s national language)
Just realised that the making of roti canai 🍥 aka flat bread actually not ❌ so simple & easy, especially the making process of hand throwing the dough ☺️
Always order & at times complaining about the long wait for roti canai to be served at mamak stall, after learning how to making it from this trip, she will not ❌ complain anymore for sure 😀
💯% confirmed no ❌ added sugar of its refreshing natural sweetness sugar cane drink 🥤to enjoy a glass after a glass. A healthy drink not to be missed ya
Note: Tebu aka sugar cane in Malaysia 🇲🇾 's national language
Also must try 👍🏻😋🤤 packed nasi lemak, BBQ honey 🍯 chicken wings & BBQ honey chicken back 🐓🍗
Personally she 👩🏻 really enjoyed the nasi lemak served here with its sweet spicy 🌶 sambal 😋🤤
Its core business remains with orchid & bonzai plants. Then, venturing to this food business from the owner’s kids ideas from a whole family discussion 🏡🗣👥👤👥 as the sales of plants were badly affected during the Malaysia’s Movement Control Order (MCO)

Traditional Village Activities
Baling Kelapa Games
A modern bowling 🎳 game, the bowling ball is replaced with a coconut🥥 in village & using the recycled plastic bottles as the bowling pins
You may check out her TikTok clip 📹🎥 to view the exciting moments captured from her travelmates. She 👩🏻 was sad 😔 that she had menstruation that morning 🔅 & ruined her excitement to join this catching fun with her travelmates…😢😭
When dancers are in trance, they display extraordinary abilities as being possessed by animal spirits eg. monkey 🐒 , snake 🐍 , elephant 🐘 , bird 🦅 etc. Some of the horsemen will swallow glasses, climb trees 🌳🌳 , walk on hot ♨️ burning charcoals etc.
It’s the practice of the “rewang” values inherent from the Indonesia 🇮🇩 Javanese influences ie. not ❌ being selfish in the community 👫👭👬, mutual respect, solidarity & sharing of experiences etc. 👭👫👬
Some of the common examples eg. Gotong royong, working together to prepare food feast etc. ☺️
Silat Performances
It’s not only a martial art, to-date it also performs in Malay villages during official ceremonies & wedding🤵🏽👰🏽
SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 is a corn 🌽 lover & she really exciting happy 😃 to be at the corn🌽farm for the 1️⃣st time, yeah‼️ The corn 🌽here so sweet to enjoy it fresh from plucking, yes ✅, no ❌ need steam/ BBQ, really so good 👍🏻😋🤤
The corn 🌽 farm (1️⃣ to 3️⃣ acres each farmer) here planted with its corn seeds from Thailand 🇹🇭 , Taiwan 🇹🇼 & China 🇨🇳 She 👩🏻 has learnt that corn 🌽 belongs to paddy 🌾 family & it took approximately 60 to 70days to harvest ie. 6️⃣ months to harvest paddy 🌾 & twice to harvest for corn 🌽
A post shared by Sienny Yong (@simplestraightforward) on
She 👩🏻 really loves 💗 the original natural sweetness from fresh corn 🌽 , corn pancake (Steamed rice flour with corn & wrapped in corn ear), corn fritters, corn drink 🥤 & corn sweet soup 🥣 during this village trip
