Festival of Wings 2018 aka Pesta Sayap 2018 ๐๐
This is an annual public event since 2004 by MNS in the middle of the bird ๐ฆ ๐ฆ migratory season to celebrating the millions of birds ๐ฆ ๐ฆ that use the East Asian-Australasian Flyway to get the best ๐๐ป of the seasons ๐
It’s themed ~ย โWelcoming the birds ๐ฆ ๐ฆ โ – Unifying our voices for bird ๐ฆ ๐ฆ conservation ๐โ ~ & with aims,
- To raising โฌ๏ธ awareness on migratory birds ๐ฆ ๐ฆ & their wetlands habitats ๐ณ๐ฑ๐
- To collecting data for both resident & migratory birds ๐ฆ ๐ฆ in the forest ๐ณ & wetlands habitat ๐ณ๐ฑ๐
- To outreaching the community & the public ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฌ to be actively involved for nature ๐ conservation campaigns
- To promoting KSNP & its surroundings as a potential Ramsar ๐ site๐, a Flyway Network Site important for local communityย ๐ญ๐ฌ๐ซ & an ecotourism ๐ destination with the variety of resident birds ๐ฆ ๐ฆ that living on the wetlands ๐ณ๐ฑ๐
This festival ๐๐ is important to communicating to public ๐ญ๐ฌ๐ซ the importance of protecting our wetlandsย ๐ณ๐ฑ๐ in Malaysia ๐ฒ๐พ Wetlands ๐ณ๐ฑ๐ provide a sustainable livelihood not just for birds๐ฆ ๐ฆ, also for the productive fishery ๐๐ areas, the cockle ๐ beds, the firefly ๐ฆ habitats, the paddy ๐พ fields etc. It also create awareness to public ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฌ on the various nature ๐ & animal conservation efforts in Malaysia ๐ฒ๐พ e.g. Hornbill, Sunbear ๐ป, PAKAS etc.
There were many exhibition booths being set up with exciting activities ๐๐
Personally, she ๐ฉ๐ป has enjoyed the booth with nature โ๏ธ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฑ craft pressed card โ๏ธ๐๐ the most ๐๐คฉ She ๐ฉ๐ป learnt so much from the MNS member cum volunteer named Ms Joyce ๐ฉ๐ปโ๐ซ about leaves ๐ฟโ๏ธ๐๐ฑcollecting from the forest ๐ณ๐ณ, then making a bookmark ๐ or greeting card with it. Special thanks ๐๐ป to Ms Joyce ๐ฉ๐ปโ๐ซ for sharing this nice nature ๐ craft idea ๐ก , bravoโผ๏ธ๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป

Kuala Selangor Nature Park (KNSP) aka Taman Alam ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐
SiennyLovesDrawing ๐ฉ๐ป has signed up โ with her friends ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ at the Nature Guide booth during her visit at the Festivals of Wings ๐๐ for a guided mangrove walk ๐ถ๐ปโโ๏ธ๐ถ๐ปโโ๏ธ๐ณ๐ฑ๐ in KSNP ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐
Special thanks ๐๐ป to Mr. John ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ , the experienced volunteering nature guide who have shared ๐ฃ๐ฅ๐ค๐ฅ an informative guided nature walk into the trails at this park ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐ for approximately 1.5 hours ๐๐ปโ๐ป
KSNP was open ๐ to public ๐ญ๐ฌ๐ซ since 1987 with 3๏ธโฃ aims,
- Education ~ To educating the public ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฌ on the importance of environmental protection ๐๐ณ๐ฑ๐๐
- Conservation ๐ ~ To instilling awareness of the public over nature environmental issues
- Research ~ To improving โฌ๏ธ the protection & conservation ๐ of wetlands ๐ฑ๐ณ๐ in the area
This nature park ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐ with 3๏ธโฃ different habitats which play an important role to the whole nature ecosystem ๐
- Secondary forest ๐ณ๐ณ
- Blackish lake ๐ฆ๐ง (Man made with both salt water ๐ฆ๐ง & fresh water ๐ฆ๐ง supplies)
- Mangroves ๐ฑ๐ณ๐
Met 1๏ธโฃ of the MNS volunteer birder, Mr Low ๐จ๐ป at the viewing tower ๐ผ & he ๐จ๐ป has kindly offered ๐๐ป to view ๐ through his digital scope ๐ญ for a resting white collared king fisher ๐ฆ at the tree ๐ณ Wowโผ๏ธ๐๐คฉ

Birdwatching Cruising ๐ฆ ๐ฆ๐ค @ Sungai Burung
An enjoyable yet under the superb hot sunny ๐๐ day to cruising ๐ค along Sungai Burung & to enjoy viewing the resident & migratory birds ๐ฆ ๐ฆ
Our boatman, Pakcik Sahar ๐จ๐ฝ also shared cockle ๐ harvesting during the cruising ๐ค with us. The cockles ๐๐ are all big & fresh ๐๐

We got some horseshoe crabs too, but then releasing them back to the river ๐ฆ๐ง as they are just baby crabs ~ tiny in size ๐

Fireflies Cruising ๐ถ @ Kampung Kuantan
Before the boat cruising,ย SiennyLovesDrawing ๐ฉ๐ปย has visited the treeย ๐ณ๐ณย planting centre as habitat conservation efforts for the firefliesย ๐๐ป
Not to be missed the beautiful sunset moment at jetty before the fireflies cruisingย ๐ถ
She ๐ฉ๐ปย has recalled that she ๐ฉ๐ป was amazed ๐คฉ๐ with the Chrismas trees ๐๐ซ alike surrounding when her parents ๐ด๐ป๐ต๐ป brought her ๐ฉ๐ป when she was a kid ๐ง๐ป for fireflies cruising ๐ถ
Hmm….Quite sad ๐๐ข to share that the Christmas trees ๐๐ซ effects no longer as great ๐๐ป as before. The fireflies numbers are declining โฌ๏ธ mainly due to the pollution, degradation of the water ๐ฆ๐งquality, clearing of river ๐ฆ๐ง reserves & mangroves ๐๐ณ๐ฑ๐ closer to the fireflies viewing ๐ sites etc. She ๐ฉ๐ป is proud & happy ๐ that various of conservation ๐ efforts has been made to conserve and rehabilitate their habitat e.g. trees ๐ณ๐ณย planting project with Berembang trees & Nipah trees
She ๐ฉ๐ป highly recommends๐๐ปto enjoy the boat ๐ถ cruising from Kampung Kuantan because the local community ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ here still using the small wooden boats ๐ถ aka sampan in Malaysia ๐ฒ๐พ’s national language. The boats ๐ถ๐ถ are steered manually by a boatman ๐จ๐ฝ๐จ๐ฝ during the cruising ๐ถ There is another venue for fireflies cruising ๐ถ named Bukit Belimbing where electronic boats ๐ค are being used
She ๐ฉ๐ป was told the fireflies are more impressive ๐คฉ๐คฉ if it hasn’t rained ๐งโ๏ธ shortly before & if it is not a full moon ๐ night ๐
Basic firefly-watching ๐ etiquette includes,
- Do not use your torch ๐ฆ / use flash ๐ธ to capture photos/ videos ๐น๐ฅ during the fireflies cruising ๐ถ as this will disturb & disrupt the fireflies’ mating
- Not to talk loudly ๐ฃ & making unnecessary noise during the cruising ๐ถ
- No smoking ๐ญ & littering โ is allowed during the cruising ๐ถ
- Quietly enjoy the nature light ๐ซ๐ซ show by the fireflies. If you catch the fireflies & brought home ๐ก, a fine of RM1๏ธโฃk will be imposed

Bioblitz Seminar 2018
This is the KSNP for Ramsar Seminar being organised by MNS with aims to present the latest data ๐๐๐ on the results of scientists ๐จ๐ปโ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ปโ๐ฌ & volunteers research about the biodiversity in KSNP ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐
All the presentations of findings ๐๐ from it will then be used as the supporting documents ๐ for the preparation & submission of KNSP ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐ as a new ๐ Ramsar Site in Malaysia ๐ฒ๐พ
It was a crowded seminar & she ๐ฉ๐ป was impressed ๐คฉ with all the researches & actions done by the MNS & other nature conservation NGOs’ volunteers ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ
Also she ๐ฉ๐ป has met the founders (a couple) ๐ซ of KNSP ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐ from this seminar

An engineerย named Mr Muhammad Akhir ๐จ๐ปโ๐ญย was being asked โโ๏ธto build a golf โณ๏ธ๐๏ธโโ๏ธ๐๏ธโโ๏ธ course from this park ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐ area, he has then managed to replace the plan by swapping it into a nature park i.e. KNSP today ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐
His wife, Ms Alice ๐ฉ๐ผโ๐ผ from UK ๐ฌ๐ง also played an important role towards realised this golf course โณ๏ธ๐๏ธโโ๏ธ๐๏ธโโ๏ธ vs nature park ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐ mission back then. It was since 1987, such a long long time for this couple ๐ซ
