Ecotourism & Nature Conservation @ Kuala Selangor

Yeahโ€ผ๏ธ SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป would like to share ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ“ about her awesome visit to Kuala Selangor with her members ๐Ÿ‘ซ๐Ÿ‘ญ๐Ÿ‘ฌ of Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) to explore its ecotourism & nature conservation recently ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Hmm…Can’t really recalled ๐Ÿ’ญ when the last time ๐Ÿ—“ she was here…

So, what & where she has visitedโ“โ‰๏ธ

Festival of Wings 2018 aka Pesta Sayap 2018 ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽŠ

This is an annual public event since 2004 by MNS in the middle of the bird ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ migratory season to celebrating the millions of birds ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ that use the East Asian-Australasian Flyway to get the best ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป of the seasons ๐Ÿ˜€

It’s themed ~ย โ€œWelcoming the birds ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ โ€ – Unifying our voices for bird ๐Ÿฆ… ๐Ÿฆ conservation ๐Ÿ’šโ€ ~ & with aims,

  • To raising โฌ†๏ธ awareness on migratory birds ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ & their wetlands habitats ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿž
  • To collecting data for both resident & migratory birds ๐Ÿฆ… ๐Ÿฆ in the forest ๐ŸŒณ & wetlands habitat ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿž
  • To outreaching the community & the public ๐Ÿ‘ญ๐Ÿ‘ซ๐Ÿ‘ฌ to be actively involved for nature ๐Ÿ’š conservation campaigns
  • To promoting KSNP & its surroundings as a potential Ramsar ๐Ÿ’š site๐Ÿ“, a Flyway Network Site important for local communityย ๐Ÿ‘ญ๐Ÿ‘ฌ๐Ÿ‘ซ & an ecotourism ๐Ÿ’š destination with the variety of resident birds ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ that living on the wetlands ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿž

This festival ๐ŸŽŠ๐ŸŽ‰ is important to communicating to public ๐Ÿ‘ญ๐Ÿ‘ฌ๐Ÿ‘ซ the importance of protecting our wetlandsย ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿž in Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ Wetlands ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿž provide a sustainable livelihood not just for birds๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ, also for the productive fishery ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿ  areas, the cockle ๐Ÿš beds, the firefly ๐Ÿฆ— habitats, the paddy ๐ŸŒพ fields etc. It also create awareness to public ๐Ÿ‘ญ๐Ÿ‘ซ๐Ÿ‘ฌ on the various nature ๐Ÿ’š & animal conservation efforts in Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ e.g. Hornbill, Sunbear ๐Ÿป, PAKAS etc.

There were many exhibition booths being set up with exciting activities ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜

Personally, she ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป has enjoyed the booth with nature โ˜˜๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ€ ๐ŸŒฑ craft pressed card โœ‚๏ธ๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ”– the most ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฉ She ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป learnt so much from the MNS member cum volunteer named Ms Joyce ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿซ about leaves ๐ŸŒฟโ˜˜๏ธ๐Ÿ€๐ŸŒฑcollecting from the forest ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ, then making a bookmark ๐Ÿ”– or greeting card with it. Special thanks ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป to Ms Joyce ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿซ for sharing this nice nature ๐Ÿ’š craft idea ๐Ÿ’ก , bravoโ€ผ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Birdwatching Cruising ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿšค @ Sungai Burung

An enjoyable yet under the superb hot sunny ๐Ÿ”†๐Ÿ”† day to cruising ๐Ÿšค along Sungai Burung & to enjoy viewing the resident & migratory birds ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ

Our boatman, Pakcik Sahar ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฝ also shared cockle ๐Ÿš harvesting during the cruising ๐Ÿšค with us. The cockles ๐Ÿš๐Ÿš are all big & fresh ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜„

Guess whatโ“โ‰๏ธ

We got some horseshoe crabs too, but then releasing them back to the river ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ’ง as they are just baby crabs ~ tiny in size ๐Ÿ˜

She ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป has captured a short clip ๐Ÿ“น๐ŸŽฅ from her birdwatching ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ cruise ๐Ÿšค with Pakcik Sahar ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฝ, do enjoy it ya ๐Ÿค—

Address๐Ÿ“: Jetty โš“๏ธ to Sungai Burung,ย Jalan Parit 4, Pantai Sungai Burung, Kampung Parit Empat, 45400 Tanjong Karang, Selangor, West Malaysia

Contact no. ๐Ÿ“žโ˜Ž๏ธ๐Ÿ“ฑ: Pakcik Sahar ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฝย +6013-318 5593

Ohh ya…You may check out MNS’s annual event named Raptor Watch to sign up via ๐ŸŒhttps://mnsraptorwatch.wordpress.com/about-rw/, then to participate & enjoy the bird watching ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿฆ at Port Dickson beach, Negeri Sembilan

Fireflies Cruising ๐Ÿ›ถ @ Kampung Kuantan

Before the boat cruising,ย SiennyLovesDrawing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปย has visited the treeย ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณย planting centre as habitat conservation efforts for the firefliesย ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Not to be missed the beautiful sunset moment at jetty before the fireflies cruisingย ๐Ÿ›ถ

She ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปย has recalled that she ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป was amazed ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ˜ with the Chrismas trees ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿ’ซ alike surrounding when her parents ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘ต๐Ÿป brought her ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป when she was a kid ๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿป for fireflies cruising ๐Ÿ›ถ

Hmm….Quite sad ๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿ˜ข to share that the Christmas trees ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿ’ซ effects no longer as great ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป as before. The fireflies numbers are declining โฌ‡๏ธ mainly due to the pollution, degradation of the water ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ’งquality, clearing of river ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ’ง reserves & mangroves ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿž closer to the fireflies viewing ๐Ÿ‘€ sites etc. She ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป is proud & happy ๐Ÿ˜ƒ that various of conservation ๐Ÿ’š efforts has been made to conserve and rehabilitate their habitat e.g. trees ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณย planting project with Berembang trees & Nipah trees

She ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป highly recommends๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿปto enjoy the boat ๐Ÿ›ถ cruising from Kampung Kuantan because the local community ๐Ÿ‘ซ๐Ÿ‘ญ๐Ÿ‘ฌ here still using the small wooden boats ๐Ÿ›ถ aka sampan in Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ’s national language. The boats ๐Ÿ›ถ๐Ÿ›ถ are steered manually by a boatman ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฝ during the cruising ๐Ÿ›ถ There is another venue for fireflies cruising ๐Ÿ›ถ named Bukit Belimbing where electronic boats ๐Ÿšค are being used

She ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป was told the fireflies are more impressive ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿคฉ if it hasn’t rained ๐ŸŒงโ˜”๏ธ shortly before & if it is not a full moon ๐ŸŒ• night ๐ŸŒƒ

Basic firefly-watching ๐Ÿ‘€ etiquette includes,

  • Do not use your torch ๐Ÿ”ฆ / use flash ๐Ÿ“ธ to capture photos/ videos ๐Ÿ“น๐ŸŽฅ during the fireflies cruising ๐Ÿ›ถ as this will disturb & disrupt the fireflies’ mating
  • Not to talk loudly ๐Ÿ—ฃ & making unnecessary noise during the cruising ๐Ÿ›ถ
  • No smoking ๐Ÿšญ & littering โŒ is allowed during the cruising ๐Ÿ›ถ
  • Quietly enjoy the nature light ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ’ซ show by the fireflies. If you catch the fireflies & brought home ๐Ÿก, a fine of RM1๏ธโƒฃk will be imposed

She ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป has captured a short clip ๐Ÿ“น๐ŸŽฅ from her fireflies cruising๐Ÿ›ถ, low lighting & only mild nature light ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ’ซ show by the fireflies being captured ya ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜

Bioblitz Seminar 2018

This is the KSNP for Ramsar Seminar being organised by MNS with aims to present the latest data ๐Ÿ“‘๐Ÿ“Š๐Ÿ“ˆ on the results of scientists ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ & volunteers research about the biodiversity in KSNP ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’š

All the presentations of findings ๐Ÿ“Š๐Ÿ“ˆ from it will then be used as the supporting documents ๐Ÿ“‘ for the preparation & submission of KNSP ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’š as a new ๐Ÿ†• Ramsar Site in Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ

It was a crowded seminar & she ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป was impressed ๐Ÿคฉ with all the researches & actions done by the MNS & other nature conservation NGOs’ volunteers ๐Ÿ‘ซ๐Ÿ‘ญ๐Ÿ‘ฌ

Also she ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป has met the founders (a couple) ๐Ÿ‘ซ of KNSP ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’š from this seminar

Guess whatโ“โ‰๏ธ

An engineerย named Mr Muhammad Akhir ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿญย was being asked โ“โ‰๏ธto build a golf โ›ณ๏ธ๐ŸŒ๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŒ๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ course from this park ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’š area, he has then managed to replace the plan by swapping it into a nature park i.e. KNSP today ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’š

His wife, Ms Alice ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿ’ผ from UK ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง also played an important role towards realised this golf course โ›ณ๏ธ๐ŸŒ๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŒ๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ vs nature park ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’š mission back then. It was since 1987, such a long long time for this couple ๐Ÿ‘ซ

A privilege to have a short interview ๐Ÿ“น๐ŸŽฅย with of of them ๐Ÿ‘ซย & observed their truly inspiring passionate for nature conservation ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š Bravo โ€ผ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

It’s a meaningful 2๏ธโƒฃD1๏ธโƒฃN trip to appreciate the on going ecotourism & nature conservation ๐Ÿ’š efforts towards in Kuala Selangor

Ecotourism @ Belum Temenggor

It’s World ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธย Habitat Day today, every year theย 1๏ธโƒฃst Monday of October

Yeahโ€ผ๏ธSiennyLovesDrawingย ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปย is gonna sharing ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ“ about her recent volunteer participation with Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), a non-governmental non-profit organization (NGO) to learn aboutย ecotourismย ๐Ÿ’š @ Belum Temenggor๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ, in particularย hornbillย conservation & habitat for its local communities ~ indigenous people aka orang asli ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿง’๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ต๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿง“๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿฝin Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พโ€™s national language

Since 2004, MNS aims to promotingย hornbills conservation in Belum Temenggor Forest Complex ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณย (BTFC)(1๏ธโƒฃof the oldest virgin rainforest on Earth,ย 130 million years old) & to enhancing public awareness of the importance of hornbills to the rainforests’๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณย ecosystem ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ is home ๐Ÿก to ๐Ÿ”Ÿย Malaysian hornbills & dubbed the โ€˜Hornbill Capital of the World๐ŸŒโ€™ with its Perak state being recognized as the Land of Hornbills

Not only Borneoโ€ผ๏ธ Yes โœ…, in fact Peninsular Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พย with allย  ๐Ÿ”Ÿย hornbill species comparatively ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

This volunteer participation has recalled her memory ofย 1๏ธโƒฃst hornbill feeding @ Pangkor Islandย early this year

BTFC ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ aka Northern Peninsular Malaysia๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พโ€™s Natural Jewels ๐Ÿ’Ž, the only remaining contiguous block to tropical rainforests ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ which linking to Southern Thailand ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ญ i.e. Bang Lang National Park & Hala Bala Wildlife Sanctuary, also part of the Titiwangsa Range ๐Ÿ’š

Currently, only BTFC ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ & the Greater Ulu Muda Forest Complex ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ are on par for the hornbill diversity in Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ, then together with the Southern Thailand ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ญ, all made up for the Hornbill Triangle (HoT)๐Ÿ”บ

Hornbills get its name from its horn-like projection i.e. a casque on their beaks (Hmm…Not all hornbill species have them though) ๐Ÿ˜Š

Hornbills are well known as the farmers ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŒพ of the rainforestsย ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ

Hornbills fly long distances looking for fruits๐ŸŽ๐Ÿย & swallow fruits๐ŸŽ๐Ÿin whole. Hmm…Some fruits ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿย are with big seeds. As they spit out countless seeds, some seeds find a place to grow & become new ๐Ÿ†• trees ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ

However, really dissappointed & sad ๐Ÿ˜ง๐Ÿ˜”ย that some of the hornbill species are experiencing critically endangered & vulnerable.ย In this connection, if lesser โฌ‡๏ธ hornbills, many rainforest trees ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ that depend on them to spread their seeds may disappear from the rainforestย ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณeventually

Whyโ“โ‰๏ธ Whyโ“โ‰๏ธWhyโ“โ‰๏ธ

Some of the main reasons are destruction/ loss ofย the hornbillsโ€™ habitats & degradation due to deforestationย (Photo ๐Ÿ“ธย below captured from BRAINS Summit 2018), fragmentation of rainforests ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ, illegal logging (Photo ๐Ÿ“ธย below captured by SiennyLovesDrawingย ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปย during her volunteer trip), poaching & hunting, conversion to agriculture e.g. oil palm plantations, over-development etc. ๐Ÿ˜ง๐Ÿ˜”

As the rainforests ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณdisappear, so does indigenous peoplesโ€™๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿง’๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ต๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿง“๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿฝculture too ๐Ÿ˜ง๐Ÿ˜”ย as theirย living style very much depended on theย rainforestsย ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ for medicine, shelter, food, other necessities etc.ย They are not known to take more than what they need as this would be seen as a transgression of the rainforest ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ & would bring curses to their people. So, the destruction of their prime resource is resulting in the destruction of their traditional ways of life ๐Ÿ˜ง๐Ÿ˜”

You may not aware that BTFC ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณconsists of 2๏ธโƒฃ big parts,

  1. Temengor Forest Reserve ~ the southern part of BTFC is largely a production forestย ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ
  2. Royal Belum State Park ~ the northern part, a protected area๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ

MNS has been working hard for years to get the whole BTFC a protected area ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ with itsย ecotourism ๐Ÿ’š efforts ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿปย Hope they will achieve success very soon

โ€œMY forest ๐ŸŒณ , MY wildlife, MY responsibilityโ€

Tasted some orang asli traditional dishes as tea time e.g. Perah nuts ๐Ÿฅœ(Oppsss…Superb addictive delicious ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿคคโ€ผ๏ธ She even has placed next order ๐Ÿ“Œย of 2๏ธโƒฃ๏ธkgs with Mr Woo๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜†),ย cassavaย & wild fern (paku pakis) from forest ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณetc.

Had a short chat ๐Ÿ—ฃ๐Ÿ‘คwith Mr Yeap๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ, the Senior Conservation Officer with MNSย on hornbill studies for almost 1๏ธโƒฃ8๏ธโƒฃ years & pursuing his PhD.ย Do enjoy an interview clip ๐Ÿ“น๐ŸŽฅย with him about his hornbill conservation experiences

Guess whatโ“โ‰๏ธ

She really viewed the flyingย Oriental Pied hornbills twice with binocularโ€ผ๏ธSo so happy๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜

Also viewed the wild elephants ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ย crossed the river ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ’งYeahโ€ผ๏ธ So so lucky ๐Ÿ€ย for herself & volunteers team as the visitors to the rainforest

However, Mr Yeap ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธย has alerted that if elephants ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ย are so near to human, it’s bad news to the orang asli as the elephants ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ gonna destroy their housesย ๐Ÿก๐Ÿก & crops planted๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฟSigh…

She has met the youngest volunteer named Shane ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿป, 6๏ธโƒฃ years old & son to Ms Christine (Blueย ๐Ÿ’™ t-shirt in the photosย ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ“ธย below).ย Highly recommended ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿปasย 1๏ธโƒฃ of the great education opportunities & childhood memories for kids

โ€œSeeing all these stakeholders ๐Ÿ‘ซ๐Ÿ‘ญ๐Ÿ‘ฌgathered is a good sign ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป that we as Malaysians ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ๐Ÿ‘ญ๐Ÿ‘ฌ๐Ÿ‘ซ are ready to commit to conservation.
