Sustainable Initiatives @ Batu Batu Resort & Tengah Island Conservation Centre, Mersing, Johor

In conjunction with Happy World Oceans Day on 8 June 2024 💖💯🌊, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 got impressed with her recent visit to some #Mersing Islands, Johor, Malaysia 🏖️🏝️🇲🇾 In particularly, the great 👍🏻 conservation efforts at Batu Batu Resort & the island-based Tengah Island Conservation (TIC) Centre, Tengah Island 🏝️, Mersing, Johor

The United Nations observes World Oceans Day 2024 which aims to raise global awareness of the benefits humankind derives from the ocean, individual & collective responsibility to use its resources wisely. The observance underscores the importance of ocean health in preserving the Earth’s 🌎environment & essential resources for all life

According to the United Nations Conference on Environment & Development (UNCED) aka Earth Summit, the ocean 🌊 produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, is home to most of the Earth’s biodiversity & provides the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world 🗺️ Moreover, it notes that the ocean is key 🔑 to the world economy, with an estimate that 40 million people will be employed by ocean-based industries by 2030. It was 1️⃣st declared on 8 June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 🇧🇷 at the Global Forum

During this recent visit to this resort, she got impressed especially the great 👍🏻 conservation efforts & initiatives on endangered sea turtles 🐢, sea grass & coral reef monitoring for 7️⃣ Mersing islands by TIC team as explained by Mr Mohd Alzam 🙋🏽‍♂️, the Community Engagement & Environmental Awareness Manager with TIC for 6 years & still counting

TIC is a biodiversity management initiative founded & primarily funded by Batu Batu Resort. It’s dedicated to the research, rehabilitation & regeneration of Mersing Island’s natural environment. Some of the TIC’s on-going conservation projects that welcome its guests to support as follows & more info via 🌐 https://www.tengahislandconservation.org

  • Volunteer at TIC
  • Shopping 🛒🛍️ for TIC merchandises
  • Sea turtle hatchery 🐢🥚
  • Adopt a turtle nest
  • Beach clean up 🧹🏖️
  • Underwater clean up 🤿
  • Coral 🪸 reef mapping
  • Marine projects ~ Coral 🪸 rehabilitation, coral 🪸 nursery, seagrass monitoring etc.
  • Terrestrial projects
  • Community outreach projects
  • Awareness talks with varied topics from sharks 🦈 , turtles 🐢 to the environment & conservation throughout the year

Initially, biodiversity data was collected & sustainable operating practices implemented within this Batu Batu Resort by its in-house conservation team. In 2014, Turtle Watch Camp was created & formed as part of a strategic partnership 🤝🏻 with the Department of Fisheries, the endangered sea turtle 🐢 conservation programme was launched

As more scientists joined the TIC team including Mr Mohd Alzam 🙋🏽‍♂️, the scope of work moved beyond a focus on turtles to wider marine & terrestrial environmental projects TIC then became an independent non-profit organisation registered under Malaysia’s Registry of Societies in 2019. TIC continues to be based at the Tunku Abdul Jalil Conservation Centre on Pulau Tengah today with Batu Batu Resort as its primary funder

Tunku Abdul Jalil Conservation Centre at Long Beach was opened on 4 Sept 2018 by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim Ismail Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Al-haj 👑 in memory of his son, His Highness Almarhum Tunka Abdul Jalil Iskandar Ibni Sultan Ibrahim 🤴 This centre & its environmental work is dedicated to the memory of Tunku Jalil. SiennyLovesDrawing appreciates the great 👩🏻💖👍🏻💯 efforts of endangerenimals fossils with detailed awareness information exhibited here.
