Sharing some facts about the puzzle ribbon learnt from the event,

  • This puzzle ribbon was adopted in 1999 as the universal sign of Autism Awareness
  • It reflects the complexity of the Autism Spectrum
  • The different colours & shapes represent the diversity of the people & families living with the condition
  • The brightness of the ribbon signals hope that through increased awareness of autism, early intervention & access to appropriate services/ supports

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is one of the fastest growing &ย life-long developmental disability that affects the functioning of the brain, thus impairing social interaction & communication skills, which makes it difficult for them to relate & communicate with others. People who have autism are also more likely to experience sensitivities in the 5 senses i.e. sight, hearing, touch, taste & smell.

As an autistic person, they tend to be more sensitive with their senses & the colours used in the vocational centre are mostly in shades of pastel with low stimulation. Each of the rooms in the centre is painted with a different colour to create different moods e.g. the staff room is painted light pink to further harness loving & compassionate teachers/ personnel; orange is used on the walls near the kitchen/ dining area to stimulate creative activities.

โ€œOur students spend an average of 8 hours a day in the centre & it is important for us to provide a conducive environment for them to learn & grow. We are thankful to both AkzoNobel & Evelyn Leong to help transform our vocational training centre, to assist in livening up using the power of colour to provide a better learning space for our studentsโ€, saysย Feilina Feisol, Chairman of NASOM.
