Oh My GERD!

From the recent Linola media conference, SiennyLovesDrawing 👩🏻 has received an invitation  💌during lunch 🍽to attend this medical 😷conference named ~ Oh My GERD❗️~

She got attracted 😮by the conference title ~ Oh My GERD❗️~ & agreed to attend it to learn more about it 🙂

Hmm…another medical 😷related event, opps…more homeworks📖🤓for her before she can share her blogging 👩🏻‍💻📝 here

~ GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease aka GERD ~

“Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured.”  ~ Gordon B. Hinckley

What makes life worth living❓⁉️

If you ask any Malaysians 👫👭👬& they would probably have “enjoying foodssss” on their list or perhaps 1️⃣ of the top life priorities too.

Food 🥘🍲🍱plays a major role in our lives ~ a daily conversation 🗣👥topic, a compass to plan social events, a display of love ❤️ , a cause for competition & a source of adventure. No one really thinks about the inability to enjoy food, hmm…because we eat almost automatically from our birth, don’t we❓⁉️

However, the inability to enjoy food 🥘🍲🍱is a reality for those suffering a specific tummy affliction which has been sweeping the nation. Scary right‼️

Hmm…you may asked “So, what is GERD❓⁉️”

When we eat, the food will travel down a tube named the esophagus into the stomach. At the bottom of the esophagus, before the opening to the stomach, there lies a circular tube of muscle named the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). When the LES becomes damaged / weakened, it fails to close & then will causing the acidic contents of the stomach to reflux into the esophagus 😲 Stomach acid has a pH level similarly to battery acid. When this acid contacts the esophagus & sometimes rises up into the mouth, then damage & pain ensues 🙄

Acid reflux causes a burning pain in the chest aka heartburn, 1️⃣ of the hallmark symptoms.

The other symptoms of GERD include a sour-tasting fluid at the back of the throat (stomach acid has a sourish taste), difficulty swallowing / a sensation that something is stuck in the chest / throat, gas build-up & excessive belching. Some patients 😷🤒 may even experience a chronic dry cough / breathlessness, which is triggered by the acid reflux. Should the acid rise up further into the mouth 👄 , bad breath can develop as the acid kills off good bacteria in the mouth. Tooth decay is another consequence of acid damaging teeth & gums

When acid reflux symptoms happen more than twice2️⃣ a week & is accompanied by difficulty in breathing / swallowing, it could denote a more serious condition aka GERD 😱

However, many GERD patients 😷🤒 believe that their condition is caused by stress / from eating spicy / acidic food. However, research has shown that stress is not a cause, it is 1️⃣ of the factors that can aggravate GERD 😯

Some of the other driving factors of GERD are,

  • Obesity ~ As weight accumulates in the belly area, it creates pressure on the diaphragm & LES to cause further weakening of the LES muscles. With Malaysia 🇲🇾 ranked as the fattest nation in Asia 🗺, it is not surprising that GERD patients would be on an increasing  📈 trend
  • Smoking 🚬~ The nicotine in cigarettes cause a relaxing effect on the LES, hence allowing stomach acid to escape into the esophagus

During the conference, a panel of experts i.e. Dr. Raja Affendi Raja Ali 👨🏻‍⚕️ (Consultant Physician & Gastroenterologist from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), Dr. Vagif Soultanov 👨🏻‍⚕️(Gastroenterologist & Naturopathic Doctor from Melbourne) & Datin Swanee The 👩🏻‍⚕️(Pharmacist & Natural Therapies Advocate) were discussed on the severity of the GERD epidemic to help the public to recognise the signs & symptoms of GERD as well as how to manage the condition successfully then 😀

“According to clinical data, GERD also can lead to anxiety & depression. GERD affects the productivity & sleep which drains a person’s sense of purpose.” explained Dr. Vagif Soultanov 👨🏻‍⚕️

1️⃣ of the patients named Raymond👨🏻(1st pax from left in the photo, wore grey shirt) shared his personal story during the conference. He has experienced heartburn years back but the symptoms would go away with a gulp of antacids. Last year, Raymond had suffered great discomfort especially after eating. He would feel the food coming back up & a sour taste in his mouth 👄 with gas & bloating too. Each day was a struggle for him as he would feel tired 😴 , not being able to sleep well ❌💤at night 🌃because of the reflux. Tests performed at the hospital & then finally showed that Raymond was experiencing a chronic form of heartburn ~ GERD ~ 😖😫

GERD is not a simple condition to manage 😩☹️

So, is there any solutions❓❓

Conventionally, heartburn & GERD are treated with medications 💊that control acid. Routinely, the use of acid-blocking drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is initiated. Examples of PPI drugs 💊include deslansoprazole, pantoprazole, omeprazole & esomeprazole. PPIs are potent stomach acid suppressants. They are popular choices to help patients deal with symptoms as they work fast

However, the symptoms of GERD are sometimes impossible to control, even with the most powerful PPI drugs 💊 Some studies have already demonstrated that up to 40% of patients 😷🤒with heartburn reported either a partial / complete lack of response to PPIs. Acid blockers are not  meant to be used for the long-term because of adverse effects, the result of compromised digestion & immune protection when acid production is suppressed over time 😲

Raymond discovered Bioeffective A online 👨🏻‍💻after surfing the net 1️⃣ night when he couldn’t sleep ❌💤 Raymond went on a dose of 320mg 3️⃣ times a day as advised by his pharmacist 💁🏻💁🏻‍♂️ Over the weeks, his GERD symptoms gradually improved. He noted how he was able to tolerate his foods so much better without those familiar gas & reflux symptoms 😃

“We know that Bioeffective A possess cellular healing properties. In this study, we wanted to see the extent of its effects amongst patients with pre-cancerous stomach conditions who were also experiencing GERD. The administration of Bioeffective A resulted in a 92% improvement in dyspeptic symptoms (GERD), including improvement in symptoms such as gastritis, gas and bowel disorders. Not only that, patients also regained normality of stomach function besides a reversal in pre-cancerous lesions,” shared Dr. Vagif Soultanov

“At this golden age, all I can hope for is to be as healthy as possible. I have been taking Bioeffective A for almost 🔟 years now for my defences & anti-aging needs. It is a very safe natural medicine & my doctors 👨🏻‍⚕️👩🏻‍⚕️will affirm that my tummy, liver & kidneys are all in excellent condition. I’m glad 😁to have found such a safe & reliable friend in health” shared by the former Malaysia’s Prime Minister👴🏻Tun Dato’ Sri Haji Abdullah bin Haji Badawi who attended this conference
