Ola Bola, dream…passion…determination…friendship…team spirit 😃⚽️

Recently went to watch this Malaysian movie with my family members during CNY, and I am truly impressed and proud with Mr Chiu Keng Guan, our local film director as well as his talented and passionate cast and crew of this brilliant Malaysian movie 🤗

Ola Bola is a fictional film story with fictional characters and based on a true event i.e. the whole Malaysian football team has competed and qualified for the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

I must self-confess 1st that I know nothing about football, but I enjoyed my watch of this Malaysian sport movie. This cinematography was breath taking, the beautifully articulated storyline and the acting felt real.

Hmm…just that the wigs and moustaches looked a bit awkwardly out of place 😝

Personally I am inspired with some of the movie scenes and spoken phrases in Ola Bola that touched my heart are relating to dream, passion, determination, friendship and team spirit.

Hmm…What and why?

Dream

This movie transported me back to an era in 1980’s where the national footballers played football for the love of the game, NOT for the money.

A very simple dream with each of the national footballer is just to play well and not to disappoint their sport audiences, who bought tickets to enter in Stadium Merdeka just to watch the match and shout loudly in supporting and cheering all the Malaysian national footballers.

The historical Stadium Merdeka

During that era, national sport players didn’t earn as much as now. You may be surprised with the pay rate of an allowance of RM5 or RM50. When there was a won for a match, then will earn RM100.

Day or night, the national footballers played football. Rain or shine, they played football. Injury or fine, they played football as filmed in Ola Bola how passionate and determine for their football dream.

Passion and determination

This movie filmed its actors that no matter how difficult to continue pursue what you enjoy the most, being passionate and determine towards it definitely drives though.

Taukeh Chow busy in his life as a rubber tapper, office clerk and also helping his girlfriend at the funfair at night on top of his daily football practices. But his younger sister still disapproves of his football chasing passion.

Chow - Captain

As an eldest son, Muthu always get the flak from his father because he is not always in his family to deliver all coconuts to the shops due to his football practices. “I know nothing except football”

Also the aspiring sports commentator named Rahman, he is so passionate in his career by always diligently practising his live news reporting with his twin daughters at home. Even in his dream, also about his live sport reporting 😉

Rahman - sport commentator

“It is easier leaving than to stay on”

Marianne has decided to continue her career in Malaysia, instead of the foreign career opportunity.

Friendship and team spirit

Ola Bola is a rare Malaysian film that succeeds on almost every level where each character, scene, costume and jokes celebrates our difference and unites us as Malaysian.

It is a local Malaysian film that ignites the patriotism in each of us as a Malaysian. It managed to film a simple but yet an effective premise i.e. United we stand, divided will fall.

“Kita menang sama-sama, kita kalah sama-sama”

Footballers busy in their trainings

It is a heart-warming tale the Malaysian football team who has to overcome their differences and personal struggles for a chance at international success.  They are left with only one chance for international glory, and this team have to unite for the country and qualify for the 1980s Olympic Games in Moscow, Russia.

“I cover you.”

“No matter what happens, we go forward as a team.”

Ola Bola shows the lives of Malaysian characters from different backgrounds, culture and ethnicity. It depicts genuinely heart-warming racial harmony within Malaysia, a true “1Malaysia”.

“Kerjasama adalah senjata kamu yang paling kuat.”

Most Malaysian movies would be conveyed in one language alone or perhaps two at most. While watching Ola Bola, I enjoyed and had lost my counting of how many languages and dialects were spoken in it. I am impressed with the movie subtitles to ensure all audiences understand the whole movie.

Mr Chiu is very good in choosing and filming beautiful scenery of Malaysia with great nature timing. In Ola Bola, he manages to film Sabah scenery beautifully. I really love and enjoy all the mountain, paddy field scenes. In particular, the old Sabah trains! I am going to check it out to enjoy my Sabah train journey in the near future as I like to travel with train 😊🚂

Would like to end my sharing about this inspired Malaysian movie with the MV of the beautiful Malay song named Arena Cahaya via link, https://vimeo.com/154953166

I love this song lyric very much 😀

Ola Bola creates another history as Malaysia’s 1st feature film which uses the immersive Dolby Atmos sound technology.  Trust me that it is worth the slightly more expensive ticket to enjoy this optimal surround-sound quality.

If you have not watched it, go! go! go! go! go! go! go! go! Watch it!

Especially for those who have a dream and passion, do continue to diligently and being determine in your chasing journey, surely it will end with a success 😄

  1. I fell in love with this movie after watching it. The moral of the story is the unity of our people. As we can see, our parent time, our people are unity and help each other to achieve dream and never judge people by their skin. is a good story and we should apply in our society as i cann’t see unity among us now.
